NEW Updates & Announcements
School Counseling Team Appreciation Week: February 5 - 9
National School Counseling Week 2024, “School Counseling: Standards-Based, Student-Focused,” sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), will be celebrated from Feb. 5–9, 2024, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.
The special week honoring school counselors provides recognition for school counselors who implement comprehensive school counseling programs, a vital part of the educational process for all students as they meet the challenges of the 21st century.
School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents; work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world; focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, career and social/emotional development; and work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.
Battlefield High School celebrates our school counselors: Ms. Clark, Ms. Finn, Ms. Gordon, Ms. Kostrzebski, Ms. Marsh, Ms. McCallum, Ms. Violett, Ms. Wolf, and Mr. Woodside!
New: Automated Traffic Enforcement Program in Battlefield's School Zone
I want to make our families aware that the Prince William County Department of Transportation (PDOT) and Prince William County Police Department (PWPCPD) have begun a new pilot automated traffic enforcement program. The program includes speed enforcement cameras in selected school zones, ours included.
Schools for the pilot speed camera program were selected based on traffic data collected by PDOT and PWCPD. Our school and PWCS are not involved in the enforcement of speed violations; this is a law enforcement action. We do not have access to or monitor the speed enforcement devices.
The pilot program will begin with an initial 30-day warning period at each school zone location, during which drivers speeding in an active school zone (lights flashing) will only receive a warning. After the 30-day warning period, drivers speeding in these school zones will receive a $100 fine. The citation will not impact driving records, demerit points or insurance premiums.

Emails should be directed to: aepp@pwcgov.org
Parents, please talk with your student drivers about the speed enforcement initiative and to adhere to the speed limit.
We appreciate our families’ support in adhering to speed limits and staying alert to fellow motorists and pedestrians in and around our school.

Select Seniors Attend White House Event
Select seniors in BHS's Student Voice Committee and Student Voice Committees from each high school in PWCS attended an event this past Tuesday held at the White House. Seniors Kira Tiller and Laith Murrar attended on behalf of BHS. The invitation was extended to the students through the Close Up Foundation.
The event was moderated by actors Chris Evans and Mark Kassen, two of the co-founders of A Starting Point (ASP) whose mission is to connect young people with elected officials for a more informed electorate.
Students had an opportunity to ask questions to Mr. Evans, Mr. Kassen and senior White House officials; Energy Secretary Granholm, Deputy Treasury Secretary Adeyemo and White House Press Secretary Jean-Pierre about important topics like the environment, sustainability, and the economy.
"Overall, it was a great experience, and I really enjoyed the conversations we had. It was really cool to be able to see Captain America in The White House!," claimed student, Laith Murrar.
Battlefield's Student Leadership Students Prepare to Host Middle School Workshops
Second and third level students in BHS's student leadership course, SALC, have been preparing a leadership workshop for students in Reagan Middle School's ambassador program. They have prepared mini lessons, activities and discussions on topics that surround confidence, communication and collaboration.
Pictured above are students in SALC practicing a collaboration activity where students had to use both verbal and non-verbal communication to work together to untie the rope.
Select SALC students went to RRMS on Friday, February 2nd to lead the workshops with the 6th, 7th and 8th grade ambassadors.
BHS is working with Bull Run Middle School to organize dates in which our SALC students can run leadership workshops with their Ambassador program.
SALC, which is listed as "Leadership Development" in the PWCS course catalog, is a course available for any student to take. Students learn, implement and practice key leadership characteristics, plan and develop donation drives and events that benefit our school and/or community, and work on ways in which to improve school culture at BHS.
