Fifth Grade Falcons
September 2026
Welcome to Fifth Grade
Welcome Parents, Families, and Fabulous Fifth Graders!
We are so excited to start our school year with all of these amazing students! This year we will laugh together, celebrate together, grow together, and most importantly LEARN together.
We have enjoyed meeting and getting to know our students so far, and we have spent these first few days talking about routines, reviewing procedures, discussing expectations, and what they can expect from Fifth Grade!

Our Schedule
School Supplies
Thank you for helping us make sure that your child has everything that they need for school! MANY students are not bringing water bottles and headphones. If your family needs help providing these things, please let your child's homeroom teacher know.
WATER BOTTLE
Please be sure to send your child with a FULLY SEALING water bottle each day. They are able to use the water fountain during breaks in the day if they do not bring their own.
HEADPHONES
Students will need headphones on some days in the classroom. If they have a pair that is preferred, please send them with them to keep at school. These should be plug in headphones or earbuds, not bluetooth headphones, cordless earbuds, or gaming headphones (with a microphone attached). Thank you!
NFES Dress Code
A Reminder About The FCPS Dress Code
The 5th grade team would like to share a few reminders about the FCPS Policy (#439) regarding dress code. Below are a few items listed in Policy #439:
"Students are restricted from wearing clothing that is unduly revealing (e.g. cut low at the neck or under the arms, exposes bare midriff, pants worn below the hips exposing the student's underwear or skin). "
"Students are prohibited from wearing clothing or items that are obscene, libelous or feature sexually offensive or vulgar words, pictures, phrases, drawings, etc."
"Students are prohibited from wearing head gear unless an exception is provided" as outlined below
"School administrators shall grant exceptions to the dress code based on disability, health reasons or for sincerely held religious beliefs unless deemed a safety concern."

What Are We Up To This Month?
Math
Our first unit will start with learning about Volume first by understanding what volume is, moving into finding the volume of solid figures using cubic units, then by using formulas. After that, we will be moving into multiplication and division with multi-digit numbers, and using strategies to solve real world math problems.

ELA- Reading & Writing
Reading:
-Students will dive into fiction and nonfiction texts and learn about the theme "inventors at work". They will read a variety of texts and answers questions regarding this theme. Students will practice listening, collaborative discussions, and writing about their reading. We will explore different characters, the author's purpose, and be able to summarize what we have read.
Grammar:
-This month we are working on reviewing complete sentences, Identifying different types of sentences based on punctuation, reviewing verbs/subject-verb agreement, and other review skills in our Foundational Skills lessons.
Writing:
-This month students will be writing an informational essay on two inventors from our Module. Be sure to ask your student about each inventor: what they invented, and how it helped their community?
Science
Properties of Matter! For the next few weeks, we will be doing several experiments and solving several science mysteries.
We will be focusing on states of matter- gas, liquid, solid. Then we will experiment with conductors, insulators, and magnetism. We will also be discussing properties of matter like density and solubility.
Matter is anything that has weight and takes up space. Ask your student what in the room "matters", and they should be able to list for you everything that is made up of particles of matter.
