May Celebrations! May Celebrations!

May is a month packed with different celebrations and recognitions: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, and Mental Health Awareness Month. During the next few weeks, we will feature each of these in our newsletter, highlighting their significance. We look forward to continuing to celebrate the diversity and well-being of our school community together.

Jewish American Heritage Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Jewish Americans throughout our country’s history. This month offers an opportunity to learn about the traditions, values, and achievements that have helped shape communities across the United States. Families can learn more by reading books from Jewish authors, exploring stories of influential Jewish Americans, visiting local libraries or museums, or learning about Jewish holidays and traditions together. Through learning and conversation, we can continue to build understanding, respect, and appreciation for the diverse backgrounds that make up our community.

Access to School Grounds During the School Day

If you come to Washington during the school day, you must sign in the office and enter through the office while on school grounds. For the safety of our students, we ask that parents refrain from visiting their students on the playground or walking near it during school hours.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in ensuring everyone stays safe!

School Lunch Update

As we enter the homestretch, our cafeteria food supplier can sometimes need to make changes to the menu due to availability of food products. Be sure to continue to refer back to the online menu for the most recent updates.

Spring STAR Assessment Begins Monday, April 27th

Beginning April 27th, students will participate in our Spring STAR assessments, which help us understand how children have grown in their learning over this school year. Results will be sent home with their final report card.

Our testing schedule will be:

  • Literacy STAR Test: Week of April 27th

  • Math STAR Test: Week of May 4th

  • Make-Up Testing: Week of May 11th

Students take these assessments in small groups, which allows for a calm environment and individualized support throughout the process.

To help your child feel their best, we encourage families to ensure students get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and arrive at school on time on testing days. A positive mindset and reassurance go a long way, too!

    Attendance Mystery Challenge!

Our Attendance Mystery Challenge is underway, and students are already revealing letters to our secret message! So far, we’ve revealed 4 letters! Each day, if 30 or fewer students are absent, we uncover a new letter.

The more letters we reveal, the closer we get to a school-wide celebration!

You can help by sending your child to school each day and asking them about the letters we’ve uncovered. Let’s keep it going this spring!

    D75 Cultural Celebration Night - May 1st!

We invite all families to attend our D75 Cultural Celebration on Friday, May 1st at 6:00 PM at Carl Sandburg Middle School. Families can reserve a table to represent their home culture or attend to learn about the multiculturalism of our community. Please RSVP using this google form: D75 Cultural Celebration Google Form

Families and staff are welcome to participate as learners if they would prefer not to reserve a table. PreK-5 classroom teachers will receive copies of the attached invitation to send with students.

Highlights for this year will include:

    • Tamales & Paletas (Mexican popsicles)
    • Passports for students as they "travel the world"
    • A performance by the Mariachi Club
    • Additional student performances

Questions, please contact me or the Parent Coordinators: Cassandra Lopez or Melissa Yonkelowitz.

Green Over Screen - From the WA Family Engagement Team

The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes "that play is fundamental to children's healthy development and that their immersion in electronic media takes away from real play."

Here are some ways to support Green over Screen:

    1. Make a list of your favorite things to do outside (as a family or independent). Make strips of paper with the ideas and add them to a jar. Prioritize that 1-2 have to be pulled daily.
    2. Making sure you have enticing toys children want to play with. Water toys, chalk, bikes and roller skating items can lead to siblings or neighbors joining in on the fun.
    3. Take the inside- outside. Play your favorite board game outside.
    4. Neighborhood scavenger hunt. How many spring things can you find?
    5. Make it a policy that when you play outside- there is NO technology.

    PTO Meeting

The last PTO Meeting of the 2025-2026 School Year is May 13th at 7pm in the MPR at Carl Sandburg. We invite all D75 Families and Staff to join us in celebrating the end of the school year.

    Camp Duncan Sponsorship

Pizza sales may have ended, but there’s still a meaningful way to support our students! We are now offering families and community members the opportunity to sponsor a student for Camp Duncan during the 2026–2027 school year.

You can fully fund a student’s trip for $75 or contribute any amount you’re comfortable with—every dollar makes a difference.

Camp Duncan is an incredible experience where students step outside their comfort zones, build confidence, gain independence, and create lasting memories. Your support helps make this opportunity possible for every student.

    Changes to Dismissal

If you need to change your child's regular dismissal, you need to email or call Pam and Abby in the main office. They oversee all dismissal changes and communicate with supervisors and staff to ensure that students get to the correct locations. Our staff do not always have time to check their email and we don't want a change to get missed.

Finally, all changes must be called in to the office by 2:00 pm

    Our office number is 847-949-2714

    D75 BPAC 🌎

BPAC meets regularly beyond the required four times per year. BPAC plans for family engagement, family education, and cultural events to support the multilingual community. The group creates specific goals each year based on identified family needs, discusses multilingual programs by building, suggests additional topics for upcoming parent education programs and reviews the district’s annual TBE/TPI application.

Please consider joining our BPAC and attending the meetings.
