Browsing the Mess: Tech Declutter
Tech Tip Tuesday (May 14, 2024)
Over time, browsing history, cookies, and extensions can build up, bogging down your browser. To restore its speed and efficiency, it's time for a digital spring cleaning!
Let's tackle some simple tasks to refresh Chrome and get you back to a smooth browsing experience.
💡Ideas for Organizing💡
🔖 Utilize Bookmarks and Folders:
- This is a classic method for keeping track of frequently visited websites.
- Teachers can create folders for different subjects, lesson plans, or professional development resources.
- Instead of having a cluttered bookmarks bar, they can bookmark important sites within these folders for easy access.

📑Master Tab Groups:
- Chrome allows grouping open tabs for better organization.
- Teachers can create separate groups for lesson planning, grading, or communication with parents.
- This helps visualize open tabs and switch between tasks efficiently.
- Groups can be color-coded for further differentiation AND can be saved for later.

⌨️ Embrace Keyboard Shortcuts:
- While not strictly organization, keyboard shortcuts are a time-saving superpower for busy teachers.
- Learning shortcuts for opening new tabs, navigating between tabs, bookmarking pages, and refreshing can significantly improve browsing efficiency.
- This allows teachers to focus on content and tasks rather than fumbling with the mouse.

💭Strategies to Keep it Clean💭
🧼 Regularly clear browsing data:
This includes your browsing history, cookies, and cached data.
These can build up over time and slow down your browser. It also is the first thing I do when something online isn't working!
To clear your browsing data in Chrome, follow these steps:
- Open Chrome.
- Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the window.
- Select "Settings" from the menu.
- Click on "Privacy and security" in the left sidebar.
- Click on "Clear browsing data."
- Choose the time range for which you want to clear your data.
- Make sure the boxes next to "Cookies and site data" and "Cached images and files" are checked.
- Click on "Clear data."
🧩 Manage extensions:
While extensions can add functionality to Chrome, too many can slow it down and create security vulnerabilities.
Regularly review your extensions and remove any you don't use frequently or trust completely.
- Open Chrome.
- Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner of the window.
- Select "More tools" from the menu.
- Click on "Extensions."
- Review the list of extensions and toggle off the switch for any you want to disable or click "Remove" for ones you no longer need.
📁Resources from Someone Else📂
The Zinn Education Project, founded by historian Howard Zinn, promotes a "people's history" perspective in middle and high school classrooms. By offering free lesson plans and resources that focus on the experiences of working people, women, people of color, and social movements, they aim to give students a more complex and inclusive understanding of American history than what traditional textbooks provide.
This resource is a great place for a starting point for a inquiry or research project surrounding Asian Americans who folks might not know about! Additionally, Zinn publishes lesson plans, templates, and resources for different critical perspectives on historical and modern day social issues and equity.
