Welcome Back, Raiders!
Back-to-School edition of the Raider Review, 2025 - 2026!
A message from Dr. Jarred Zapolnik, superintendent of South Range Local Schools
Dear South Range Families,
It is that time of year again! As summer comes to a close, we are excited to welcome back our students, staff, and community for the 2025–2026 school year. Each new school year brings with it a sense of renewal—a fresh chapter to write together—and this year’s theme, “Stronger Together: Our Story Moves Forward,” reflects exactly that. Our district has never been defined by a single moment or challenge, but by the strength of its people and the shared commitment to our students.
As we begin this new chapter, I would like to thank each of you for your support, engagement, and dedication throughout the past year. We celebrated many achievements across academics, arts, athletics, and service—all while navigating changes, embracing growth, and staying true to our mission. Together, we demonstrated what it means to be the community centerpiece, building on excellence.
Looking Ahead: New Programs & Opportunities
Building on the momentum from last year, we are proud to announce that students have already enrolled in our new Building Trades course, a significant addition to our career pathways that prepares students for real-world success. Additionally, we have adopted new K–6 Reading and Math curricula, including Amplify Desmos (K–2 and 5–6) and i-Ready Math (3–4). These resources, selected through meaningful collaboration with teachers and staff, will provide personalized learning opportunities for enrichment and intervention, ensuring every student receives the support they need to thrive.
We are also expanding enrichment offerings across the district, including:
Middle School:
Rock Band
eSports
Math 24
Book Club
(Potentially launching) Archery Club
Elementary School:
Art Club
Storybook Stretches
Expanded Math 24 (grades 3–5)
These programs reflect our vision of cultivating excellence while encouraging students to explore their interests and talents.
Communication, Collaboration & Community
We remain committed to open, transparent communication. Through Second Cups of Coffee, Fall Forums, district-wide surveys, and weekly updates, we’ve created more opportunities for dialogue and connection. Our Raider Ambassadors will continue their role as key communicators between the district and our broader community, helping to ensure all voices are heard.
Safety & Resources
We have also prioritized safety and resources by adding 240 new Chromebooks and refining our Technology Fee Structure and Device Usage Model based on your feedback. In addition, we are actively pursuing safety grants to further enhance the security of our schools.
Master Facilities Plan
Looking ahead, we are continuing work on our Master Facilities Five-Year Plan, which was developed through community and staff input during the 2024–2025 school year. This plan outlines actionable steps to support long-term sustainability, resource management, and the future needs of our campus. We look forward to sharing progress with you throughout the year.
A Unified Mission
Our district will continue to focus on the four key components of the Raider Way:
- High Expectations
- Communication & Collaboration
- Student Performance
- Safety & Resources
These pillars guide everything we do and reflect our commitment to Getting Better Every Day (GBED).
As we move into the new school year, I am energized by the possibilities ahead. We are South Range, and as a collective team, there is no limit to what we can accomplish. Let’s make the 2025–2026 school year a time of learning, growth, and community pride. Thank you for your continued partnership. Stronger Together: Our Story Moves Forward.
Please join us for our first home football game on August 22, when the Raiders take on Uniontown Lake. Let’s pack the stands and cheer on our students, band, and cheerleaders! 🏈 And as a reminder, school starts after Labor Day on September 3, 2025!
Have a fantastic year, Raiders!
Sincerely,
Dr. Jarred Zapolnik
Superintendent
South Range Local School District

Welcome back to school students and parents!
Transportation Information
🚌 New Bus Dismissal Process
In the Spring of 2025, we tested a new bus dismissal procedure for the buses only to help streamline loading, improve supervision, and ensure timely departures. We appreciate your patience and feedback as we fine-tune this process. As such, for the 2025-2026 school year, all buses will exit through the elementary lane.
🚌 South Range Launches StopFinder App for Transportation Updates
South Range Local School District is excited to introduce StopFinder, a secure and user-friendly parent app that will be used for student transportation communication during the upcoming school year.
StopFinder allows registered parents and guardians to receive notifications in real time pertaining changes in their child's bus schedule right from their phone or device via email. This app features a two-way messaging system so families and the South Range Transportation Department can communicate quickly and securely.
Key features of StopFinder include:
-
Real-time updates and alerts from the Transportation Department
-
Secure in-app messaging for direct communication
-
Easy-to-use interface for busy families
Parents and guardians will receive an email invitation to register for StopFinder before the first day of school. Once registered, users can download the app and begin receiving updates right away.
This new tool is part of South Range’s ongoing effort to improve communication and ensure a safe, connected transportation experience for our families.

News for You: Ohio bans cell phones in schools with some exceptions
Powering Down: District will continue to be phone free in 2025-2026
Ohio law requires schools and districts to adopt local policies that:
- Emphasize that student cell phone use be as limited as possible during school hours.
- Reduce cell phone-related distractions in classroom settings.
- May permit students to use cell phones or other technological devices for student learning or to monitor or address a health concern.
In the United States, 95% of teens (children ages 13 to 17) have access to smart cell phones. Students, on average, receive 192 alerts per day from their cell phones, about 11 notifications per waking hour, one every five minutes. Cell phones and their applications are designed to catch the attention of students, which is disruptive to both learning and relationships. Even when students don’t check their cell phones, the presence of a phone impacts their ability to think. Because of this, many Ohio schools have policies that eliminate student phone use during school hours. Schools that have successfully implemented policies prohibiting the use of cell phones report that students are talking, interacting, laughing, and enjoying themselves. Research demonstrates these policies reduce bullying frequency, especially among students ages 13-16. They similarly have positive and significant impacts on standardized test scores and grade point averages of girls.
Without access to cell phones, students can focus on the present, the people around them, and their education. Without the disruption of cell phones, school staff can spend more time teaching and supporting students. “Our school children currently face countless distractions every day from the devices in their pockets,” said Governor DeWine. “By limiting these distractions, we will re-establish the opportunity for students across Ohio to immerse themselves in their classwork, learn from their teachers, and create lifelong memories with their closest friends.” Schools will be required to adopt their cell phone policies no later than July 2025, ahead of the 2025-2026 school year.
The goal: Less distractions for all Raiders!
📵South Range Local School District will be phone free📵
Since the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, the South Range Local School District has been free from cell phone distractions as the district focuses on BOE policy enforcement. This year, the district will again implement its Board of Education policy pertaining to cell phone. This policy aligns with the restrictions that were included in the finalized state budget, which Gov. Mike DeWine signed June 30. As the District did since the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, it will collaborate with local and state leadership to review or revise the current cell phone policy, ensuring it is aligned with state law.
Beginning on the first day of classes, the district plans to enforce the current policy that restricts the use of cell phones during the school day. In recent years, students were permitted to use their devices between classes and at lunch; however, they are now limited to before and after school.
The policy includes exceptions for students who require a cell phone to monitor a health concern or for student learning as determined by school officials. Office personnel will relay emergency messages to students when needed.
📵For the 2025-2026 school year, our district will enforce our current policy, which is located below.
South Range Local Board Of Education Cell Phone Policy: 5136 - PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICES
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Question: What does this mean for our K-12 students?
Answer: There will be no phones during the school day in the K-12 complex. Cell phones will be permitted before and after school. They are to be powered off and placed away in book bags and/or lockers. Per the district's policy, students are prohibited from using a PCD except:
- when the Principal authorizes a student to use a PCD for educational purposes during instructional time;
- during school-related events and functions (e.g., after-school activities, extra-curricular activities); or
- while riding in school vehicles (Distracting behavior that creates an unsafe environment shall not be tolerated and may result in the loss of use of the PCD while in a school vehicle.).

Breakfast (K-12): $1.50 Full Pay
Lunch (K-4): $3.00 Full Pay
Lunch (5-12): $3.25 Full Pay

**If you qualify under FREE or REDUCED status, both breakfast and lunch will be FREE for both of those meal statuses.
Please complete the 2025-2026 Free & Reduced Meal Application
We encourage every family to complete the 25/26 Free & Reduced Meal Application. The application can be found online under the food services tab where you can complete the application online & get an instant meal status update once the application is completed, or there are hard copies available in each building office. We ask that you fill this application out and return it to your student’s building office to see if they qualify for free/reduced meals. You will receive notification via the mail with your updated meal status within 1 week of sending your letter to the office.
**If you were free/reduced status in the previous school year, you still MUST fill out a new application for this current school year. If you do not fill out a new application from years prior, the meal status will automatically go to full paid.
❖ Option #1 Complete the F/R application online via the link under the food service tab & receive instant notification of your student’s status.
❖ Option #2 Complete the paper version of F/R meal application, return immediately to your
student’s building office, and receive your updated meal status via mail within 1 week of submitting the form in person.
🍊🥗PaySchools Central. 🌮🍡
You may load money onto your student’s account either online through PaySchools (link under
the food service tab), or by cash/check to the school. PLEASE mark your student’s name on the
outside of the envelope along with the word “Cafeteria” so the building offices know where to send it. Checks may be made out to: South Range Cafeteria.
To load funds online please go to the district’s website under departments-food services-click on the blue & white Payschools button-to register your student’s ID number and download funds to their lunch account online. You have access to your child’s account 24/7 and may check account balances, as well see detailed reports on when and what your student is charging to their account. PaySchools accepts credit card prepayments 24hrs. a day with an automated update to South Range’s QSP-Point of Sales System. Please note: some payments may take up to 24 hours to go through to the school’s cash register system.
Student Lunch Accounts
Students have their own individual lunch account number that represents his or her account. Lunch accounts MUST be prepaid. The account is NOT to be used as a charge account; rather, similar to a checking account. If your student’s lunch account had a negative balance from last school year, it has been carried over to this school year. We ask that you please pay any negative balances off immediately.
❖ If you do NOT want your student purchasing any “extra” food or drink items for the 2025/26
school year, please notify food service director, Kaitlyn Pierce, via email at
Kpierce@southrange.org or office phone (330) 549-4070.
Students will be allowed to charge only five lunches (up to $16.25) on their lunch account.
Students who have a negative balance will NOT be permitted to purchase any a la carte snack or
beverage items. Parents/Guardians will be notified via phone call or letter when their child’s
lunch account reaches a charge of more than $16.25. You may check your student’s lunch
account at any time by setting up a PaySchools account online. The Payschools account allows
you to load money, check account balances, & see exactly what your student is purchasing each
day. If you need your student’s lunch ID# please contact Kaitlyn Pierce, Food Service Director at (330) 549-4070 or by email Kpierce@southrange.org.

Spring 2025 Ohio State Testing (OST) Student Results
Dear South Range families,
In accordance with House Bill 33, it is mandated that school districts inform families about their child's Ohio State Test (OST) score by June 30. As of now, the district has received and uploaded each student’s Overall Scaled Score and Overall Performance Score in ParentAccess.
It is important to note that the Performance Level for each test is based on a scaled score. A scaled score of 700 or above is considered passing.
Please remember that these scores represent just one snapshot in your child’s academic journey. Every child’s growth and achievement are unique and cannot be fully detailed by standardized testing alone.
If you have not done so already, please set up your child's account in ParentAcess so that you will be able to view their scores using a Web Browser or Mobile App:
