We Did It!
What a school year! We have made significant progress and raised expectations for our students this year. As we move into summer break, we want to help prevent what is commonly known as the “summer slide,” which occurs when students lose some of the academic skills and knowledge they gained during the school year.
Next school year, we will continue to focus heavily on increasing academic rigor in the classroom, and partnership with families is key. If your student spends at least 20 minutes a day on IXL, it can greatly improve academic performance. If 40 minutes a day feels overwhelming, consider alternating subjects by completing 20 minutes of math one day and 20 minutes of reading the next. This simple routine can help students retain knowledge and close possible academic gaps over the summer.
We are already looking forward to the 2026–2027 school year! Our students will continue setting goals that align with our School Improvement Goals.
On May 7, our incoming 5th graders visited SMS for our first-ever Step-Up Day, and it was a tremendous success. Students toured the building, participated in a question-and-answer panel with current 5th and 6th graders, listened to a presentation titled A Day in the Life of a Middle Schooler, and took part in team-building activities. Students were divided into four groups, allowing them to meet new classmates and begin building relationships. They were also introduced to their 5th grade teachers and learned about our three core commitments. Our 4th graders and their teachers had an exceptional experience at SMS.
Congratulations to our Students of the Month for March, April, and May! On May 13, we celebrated with our final student breakfast of the year. Thank you to our families for making the time to join us and celebrate our students’ accomplishments.
Congratulations to our art, band, choir, and drama students on an outstanding Art Festival! Thank you to Mrs. Killey, Mr. Lay, Mrs. Wehrli, Mrs. Sgiers, and Mr. Sanders for their hard work and dedication.
Good luck to our Track Team at Sectionals! We are sending positive thoughts and cheering you on all the way!
We would also like to thank Steve, our “Wal-Mart Guy,” for helping support our Walk-A-Thon fundraiser. Every contribution makes a difference! Please consider supporting this fundraiser as we work to provide even more great experiences for our students next year. The fundraising link closes tonight at 12:00 a.m., and our Walk-A-Thon will take place on May 22. Let’s go!
Promotion is next Monday! Congratulations to our 8th graders as they begin exciting new chapters in their lives. We are closely monitoring the weather for the ceremony. Weather permitting, promotion will take place on the SHS football field. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to the SHS gymnasium.
Please note that seating will be limited if the event is held indoors. Each 8th grade student will receive six tickets. If your family requires additional tickets, please contact Jill Grey. Additional tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
Have a great summer!🖤🧡

6th Grade Dental Reminder:
Completed Proof of School Dental Exam forms are required for current 6th grade students by May 15th. If you are unable to obtain the required dental exam, please complete the Dental Exam Waiver Form.
Medication Pick Up:
Any medication in the health office must be picked up by the last day of school and any medicine not picked up after the last day must be disposed of. Medication must be picked up by a parent or guardian, students cannot take it home themselves.
Attention 5th and 8th Grade Families: It’s not too early to start planning for next school year!
Your soon to be 6th and 9th graders will be required to have a physical exam and up-to-date immunizations completed before the first day of school next year. Scheduling physical exam appointments early can ease the stress that goes along with back to school preparations!
