Week 4! Week 4!

September: Empathy

Dear Families,

Empathy is an essential skill that helps children build strong friendships, resolve conflicts peacefully, and become kind, thoughtful members of their communities.

Throughout the month, students will be engaging in activities, discussions, and stories that help them:

  • Recognize emotions in themselves and others

  • Practice active listening

  • Show compassion through their words and actions

  • Understand different perspectives

We encourage you to continue the conversation at home by asking questions like:

  • “How do you think your friend felt today?”

  • “What’s something kind you did for someone else?”

  • “What helps you feel better when you're upset?”

🎉 Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month

(September 15 – October 15)

We are also proud to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans. In our classroom, students will explore:

  • Inspiring leaders, artists, and historical figures

  • Traditional music, literature, and food

  • Spanish language and cultural traditions from various countries

We believe that celebrating different cultures helps us build empathy and appreciation for others—a perfect connection to our character focus this month!

If your family celebrates Hispanic heritage and would like to share a tradition, story, or artifact with the class, we would love to hear from you! Please feel free to reach out to us.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us grow thoughtful, inclusive, and empathetic learners.

Ms. Fonville & Dr. Evans

Estimadas familias:

This is an important bus announcement for students who ride bus 87 and 76. Starting September 8, bus 76 will be leaving from school at 2:20. Please expect students home a few minutes early.

Bus 87 will be riding on the second route of bus 76. These students on 87 will be arriving home later than usual. Because we are short drivers, we have to use this method.

We are also waiting on more bus approvals. The transportation department said they have over 1000 approvals. When we get the approvals, we will let you all know immediately. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If there is anyone willing to drive buses, please contact the transportation department.

Buenas tardes,

We are now a Capturing Kids Hearts School. The primary focus of Capturing Kids’ Hearts (CKH) is to develop healthy relationships between all members of the school community. CKH is a framework that helps good teachers become better by equipping them with tools with which they can build meaningful relationships with their students, provide a safe environment in which students want to learn, and develop a dialogue for team-building. Teachers utilizing the CKH framework are dedicated to building classrooms where trust, respect, and caring relationships flourish. We are committed to implementing these processes at HRE.

Outcomes

The use of CKH helps to improve the school climate by:

★ Developing safe, trusting, & self-managing classrooms.

★ Improving classroom attendance by building students’ motivation and helping them take responsibility for their actions and performance.

★ Decreasing negative behaviors such as: disruptive outbursts, violent acts, bullying, and other risky behaviors.

★ Developing students’ empathy for diverse cultures and backgrounds.

EXCEL Model

The EXCEL Model helps teachers to effectively impact their students each time they come together.

★ Engage: Students are greeted with eye contact and a sincere welcome.

★ X-plore: Teachers listen and attend to the personal, emotional, and academic needs of our students.

★ Communicate: Teachers communicate care as well as content.

★ Empower: Teachers empower students to gain the ability to "use and do" the things they have been taught.

★ Launch: Deals with how we "end and send" our students into the world. The purpose is to start our students on a course of action by ending our classes on a powerful note.

el desarrollo de aulas seguras, confiables y autogestionadas; la mejora de la asistencia a clase, fomentando la motivación de los estudiantes y ayudándolos a asumir la responsabilidad de sus acciones y desempeño; la disminución de comportamientos negativos como: arrebatos disruptivos, actos violentos, acoso escolar y otras conductas de riesgo;

el desarrollo de la empatía de los estudiantes hacia las diversas culturas y orígenes;

Modelo EXCEL

★ Involucrar: Los estudiantes son recibidos con contacto visual y una bienvenida sincera;

★ Explorar: Los docentes escuchan y atienden las necesidades personales, emocionales y académicas de nuestros estudiantes;

★ Comunicar: Los docentes transmiten atención, además de contenido;

★ Empoderar: Los docentes empoderan a los estudiantes para que adquieran la capacidad de usar y hacer lo que han aprendido;
