Hello EMS Families,

It's hard to believe that we are already halfway through September! In the last couple of weeks, 7th and 8th graders have gone on their team-building field trips, the athletics program has launched (check out more details below to access team schedules and locations), and students have been settling into new friendships, setting community norms in classrooms, and making connections with teachers and staff.

In other news, our afterschool homework help program re-opened last week, and next week our afterschool clubs, affinity groups, and activities will be back! Please find more information on the offerings and schedule below. EngageEMS, our PTO, met for the first time last week with a great turnout; I encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about EMS or supporting learning experiences through fundraising to attend. The next meeting, held remotely, is scheduled for October 13th from 6-7:30pm.

Finally, we have continued to enjoy a safe and healthy start to the year; masking, routine hand cleaning and other precautions have ensured that we can all continue to teach and learn together. This has been fortunate, but also the result of continued caution on the part of staff, families and students. And it is worth it! It's been a joy to watch our learners benefit from teamwork, collaboration, and social time with friends and classmates.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions, concerns, ideas for community partnerships, or anything else!

With gratitude,

Sabrina

EMS Open House

EMS will hold our Open House on Thursday, October 7 from 6-7pm. This will be a remote, synchronous (live) event. While we had originally hoped to run an in-person event, this decision was made out of safety concerns for our greater community, at school and at home, given the ongoing number of COVID cases we continue to experience in our region.

While the details still need to be hammered out, we expect to include a live-streamed welcome from the administrative team, followed by parents following a "schedule" of links to their child's team and exploratory teachers. Sessions will be recorded so they can be viewed later by families unable to attend, or for families who would like to review what was shared with one of our multilingual liaisons. More information to follow soon!

The SOCA is open to all BIPOC middle schoolers; meetings will be held in person on Wednesdays beginning at the end of September and will be co-facilitated by Balkisa Omar and Raphaella Brice. More information regarding location and enrollment updates will be shared soon; please visit the website to read more about the goals of BIPOC Affinity Spaces.

MathCounts Begins Next Week!

To all those interested in Math:

Beginning Monday, September 20, MathCounts sessions will begin with Alan Matson. They will be held before school at 7:15 in Mr. Chira's room, Room 108.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with MathCounts, it's a middle school math competition that is held annually. There are both individual and team competitions that are open to all students in middle school. This year the MathCounts class will study advanced math problem solving, as well as explore applications of math to such topics as games, codes and trick-or-treating.

Come and enjoy some math!!!!

Sixth Grade Art

Sixth Grade Art is Exploding!

After doing crayon rubbings of interesting textures from around the building, students added many colorful layers. Paint, pastel, rubberstamps, even ink was layered on, resulting in some fantastic and vibrant artwork. These were then cut into smaller pieces and are what makes the innards of these fabulous exploding books.
