So Much to LOVE About Dance & You!
LOVING DANCE & LOVING WHO GOD MADE ME
This month in our FAITH BUILDERS for our IGNITE, GLOW & ILLUMINATE classes we are diving deeper into our verse of the month by looking at ourselves as dancers through the lens of this scripture.
The world talks about self-love, and I think what they are hinting at is what we hear about in the greatest command -
Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
- Matthew 22:37-39 NIV
We are called to love ourselves, and it's important to remember that is in conjunction with loving God and others.
I have found dancers to be incredibly kind and loving toward others and can sometimes be hard on themselves. It is easy to fall into the trap of comparison or being hard on ourselves for things that don't always come easy. We are asking our students these questions:
- Are there any characteristics of your body that make dance easy for you?
- Are there any characteristics of your body that frustrate you in dance?
I know for me, these were the thoughts I had as a dancer growing up -
- I am flexible when stretching forward but not when doing an arabesque.
- I can replicate movement well and learn skills correctly, but I'm slow at retaining choreography.
- With flat feet, I could never be a professional Ballet dancer, but I've learned that I love and find success as a Tap & Jazz dancer.
Fortunately, God uses imperfect people to fulfill His purposes, and as I've learned through the years, our weaknesses and strengths are typically just two sides of the same coin. This is something we want our students to learn as they progress as dancers - and growing humans.
- There is grace.
- All we are expected to do is our best in each moment.
- We can be thankful for the challenges we face, because these help us grow.
May you continue to dance through life with grace for yourself, others and a profound love of your Creator!

Michelle Revelle
