Weekly Update 9/8/25

9-8-25
From the Principal
Parents, Students, and Faculty,
We are excited to celebrate Homecoming Week at Seminole County Middle High School! Each day will feature fun dress-up themes, and our Homecoming Representatives will be recognized during halftime of Friday night’s football game as we face off against Pelham. To cap off the week, both the Middle School and High School Homecoming Dances will take place on Saturday. Teachers, you are welcome to wear jeans this week as we celebrate!
Our student-athletes also have a busy week ahead. Softball will be at home on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, and our football team looks forward to the big Homecoming Game on Friday night. Middle School and JV football will travel to Early County on Thursday, and Cross Country will be in Albany on Saturday. Come out and support your Indians!
Progress reports and GMAS Family Reports went home last week. We encourage all students and parents to review these reports carefully, set goals, and stay focused on academic achievement as we move forward this semester. Let’s continue working hard and supporting each other in and out of the classroom.
It's going to be another busy, but amazing week here at SCMHS, the best school in southwest Georgia!

Thank you to those who have submitted their students' Georgia immunization records. For those who have not yet submitted your child’s shot records, you are now PAST the deadline date. Your child is in danger of being placed on the withdrawal list per GA State Law. Please immediately contact your child’s doctor’s office or local health department to obtain a copy of their records. If your child receives their immunizations in another state you will need to take your current record to the local health department and have it updated to a Georgia record. Please contact our school nurse, Tina Calhoun, with any questions.
Citizen Gummy Bears
Students in Mrs. Riley’s 6th grade Social Studies class recently explored different types of governments and the ways citizens participate in each. To make the lesson more engaging, they used gummy bears as stand-ins for citizens to demonstrate how decision-making works in various systems of government. This hands-on activity gave students a fun and memorable way to better understand how governments function and the role of citizens within them.

WBL Spotlight
Emily McGee, a senior at SCMHS, is completing her Work-Based Learning hours at The Food Trailer. After successfully completing three Agriculture pathways—Floral Design, Floriculture, and Animal Science—Emily is now pursuing the Agribusiness pathway, making this opportunity a perfect extension of her classroom learning. At The Food Trailer, Emily’s responsibilities go beyond business transactions and customer service; she also gains valuable experience in marketing and promotion.
Christ Mission’s The Food Trailer, owned and operated by Deana Lee, is a new Work-Based Learning partner this year, but its support for our school is nothing new. From offering student and teacher discounts to lending a helping hand whenever needed, The Food Trailer has been a generous friend of SCMHS. A big thank-you to Deana and The Food Trailer for partnering with the WBL program. And to Emily—keep up the great work serving delicious treats with a smile!
Seminole Included in CTAE Quarterly Newsletter
We are excited to share that Seminole County’s CTAE German Exchange Program was featured in the state CTAE quarterly newsletter! This is a big honor and shows the great work our students and teachers are doing to build connections that reach far beyond our classrooms.
Through this exchange, our students get the chance to learn alongside friends from Bavaria, exploring agriculture, careers, and culture in a hands-on way. It’s an experience that not only teaches new skills but also creates lasting friendships and memories.
We are proud to see our program highlighted at the state level and can’t wait to see how it continues to grow for our students in the future!

GHSA statement on NIL
The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) voted to amend its policies regarding Name, Image, and Likeness payments to prep student-athletes. The changes are focused on curtailing any activity from what is known as NIL Collectives, a system that has permeated and fundamentally altered college athletics. NIL Collectives are shell corporations that function to exploit loopholes in NIL policy and allow donors to pay student-athletes for their athletic talents and enrollment at specific institutions –– these payments are often used in a recruiting context to maintain current players, solicit transfer athletes, or sign top level high school recruits.
With fear of the NIL Collective system seeping down from the NCAA and into the high school level, the GHSA has taken swift action to amend its rules. The new language to GHSA policy was formally voted in yesterday: “No student-athlete may be a member of nor receive compensation or any other benefit from a Collective or NIL Club. A Collective is defined as any group organized or existing for the purpose of compensating or benefiting an individual student[-]athlete or group of student athletes of a member school. NIL Clubs are defined as a group of student athletes organized or existing for the purpose of soliciting funds or other benefits from fans, members or other sources, managing or promoting NIL activities of student athletes or otherwise providing funds or other benefits to an individual student athlete or group of student athletes.”
