RAMSAT MISSION UPDATE BY DR. PETER THORTON, RAMSAT MENTOR

Just before the holiday break, a group of Oak Ridge High School students accomplished a remarkable goal – they presented a poster about their own research to the world’s largest conference for Earth and space sciences. The students – Hudson Reynolds, Laurel Hetrick, Joe Blair, Adler Keehn, Jonathan Bonamarte, Odelia Kneiser, Brandon Bonamarte, and Boru Kneiser – traveled to New Orleans in December to participate in the 2021 Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union. In August this group had submitted an abstract to the meeting organizers, hoping that they would be selected to present their research findings about thermal regulation of a satellite in orbit around the Earth. In October they got the news that their application was successful, and that all registration fees for them to attend the meeting would be paid by the conference organizers.

The students worked together to perform the research and design their poster. The conference is intended for scientists to present new results from their own research, and this team rose to the challenge by gathering and analyzing data from a small satellite that they themselves had designed, built, delivered for launch, and operated in orbit. They had begun work on their space mission, named RamSat, as part of a NASA STEM class at Robertsville Middle School. With RamSat’s launch this past June, the group has been able to receive data from the satellite at their radio ground station in the RMS STEM classroom, with additional data gathered by amateur radio enthusiasts around the world.

RamSat experiences extreme variation in temperature as it orbits the Earth, and the students studied how small changes in the orbit at different times of year led to large changes in temperatures measured on RamSat’s solar panels and inside its electronic components. They were able to accurately predict, months in advance, the occurrence of a strong heating event that took place at the time of the poster presentation in mid-December. The student team was responsible for all aspects of their research and presentation, and on December 16th they were all present in the vast poster hall at the New Orleans convention center, with thousands of graduate students, professors, and professional researchers to share what they had learned with their fellow scientists. Dozens of people stopped by to hear about the RamSat mission and to discuss the students’ research findings, and the students in turn had opportunity to visit with many other researchers studying topics as diverse as colonization of other planets to making biofuels from algae.

These students gained a first-hand appreciation for the collaborative approach that drives much of modern scientific research. They also made great strides in learning how to communicate the results of their research to an audience of curious non-experts. In all of their preparations, and in their enthusiastic engagement at the conference, these students exemplified and did honor to the intellectual spirit of the Oak Ridge Schools. Congratulations to the RamSat student team for an outstanding performance!

ORHS WANTS TO BE A FAFSA CHAMPION!

ORHS IS PARTICIPATING IN THE FAFSA CHALLENGE - WE WILL UPDATE THE NUMBER OF SENIORS COMPLETING THE FAFSA WEEKLY.

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission and Tennessee Student Assistance Corporation (THEC/TSAC) are excited to announce the TN FAFSA Challenge, a statewide campaign for Tennessee public high schools to increase the FAFSA completion rates among Tennessee students.

While Tennessee continues to be a leader in nationwide FAFSA completion, there is still work to be done. Students who complete the FAFSA are more likely to enroll in higher education, persist in their college coursework, and obtain a degree.

As part of the Challenge, THEC/TSAC plans to honor high schools who are able to increase FAFSA completion in their schools. Specifically, we are encouraging high schools to increase the share of their Tennessee Promise applicants who complete a FAFSA. High schools that increase their Tennessee Promise FAFSA completion rate by 5 percentage points OR have 95 percent of Tennessee Promise applicants complete a FAFSA will be designated as FAFSA Champions. We also plan to honor the high schools that have the highest FASFA completion rate and those that have the largest year over year improvement for the entire state.
