Principal Update: Principal Update:

Y.E.S Families,

Our construction project is moving right along! It has been fun to watch cement being poured from our classroom windows and watch the crane place steel beams during recess! Right now, construction crews are working hard on the new Early Childhood Center on the west side of the building.

Next year will bring many changes and challenges to Y.E.S that will affect things like drop-off and pick-up, grade-level classroom location changes, and much more. We will begin to communicate changes this spring with a lot of communication happening next fall. Please ensure you are reading all Infinite Campus updates, Newsletter, and SeeSaw communication.

As we communicated in January and February, York Elementary School’s final day of school will be on May 13, 2026 with a 2:10 dismissal. The Board of Education has made this change so that school staff can safely move equipment and materials prior to construction coming into our building.

Our new math curriculum is going incredibly well at Y.E.S. All students have a “Number Corner” time where they practice and review different math skills. During math, students are being introduced to multiple strategies to solve problems and are becoming strong critical thinkers. Our NWEA MAP Growth scores showed great growth from Fall to Winter -- as a school, our students averaged in the 67th Achievement Percentile, which was an increase from the average of the 58th Achievement Percentile in the Fall. This means Y.E.S students performed above the national average on this assessment. Y.E.S students are doing great things in math!

Speaking of assessments, as we move into Spring, students will take another round of assessments. Students in grades 3-5 will participate in the NSCAS test, which is like a MAP Growth test but is a test that all public school students take each spring. Students in K-2 will take other assessments from MAP Growth so we can celebrate their growth over the year, and then begin planning for the next school. Classroom teachers will communicate when those assessments are happening. Thanks for helping students get great sleep and a good breakfast before assessments!

This school year has been a great one, and we will work hard to finish the 4th quarter strong! Thanks for your partnership and support as we work to ensure that every student is learning and growing every day.

News from the Nurse News from the Nurse

March is National Nutrition Month – Info. From the NIH

We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition) is a national education program designed to give parents and communities a way to help children learn to eat nutritious foods. As parents, you can do a lot to help your children learn healthy eating habits and maintain a healthy weight. Involving them in meal preparation and cooking can motivate them to try new foods – and is a good way to spend time together as a family.

What is a “healthy” diet?

· Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat-free milk products.

· Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts.

· Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, sodium/salt, and added sugars.

· Stays within your calorie needs.

Focus on Healthy Food Choices - Choose the GO, SLOW, and WHOA foods:

GO FOODS – are the lowest in fats and added sugar. They are nutrient dense with a better source of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients important to health. Examples of GO foods are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat milk products, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, egg whites, or egg substitute.

SLOW FOODS - are higher in fat, added sugar, and calories. SLOW foods include vegetables with added fat, white refined bread flour, low- fat mayonnaise, 2% low fat milk products, peanut butter, pizza, baked chips, and mac and cheese. Have slow foods sometimes.

WHOA FOODS – are the highest in fat and sugar. They are calorie dense foods and low in vitamins, minerals, and other needed nutrients. Have WHOA foods once in a while, and when you do have them, have small portions. Examples of WHOA foods are whole-milk products, fried foods, bakery sweets, candy, soda, chips, sugary cereals, and creamy salad dressings.
