Recntly, a mother asked me if she should look into her child's cellphone. She was concerned with invaing her child's privacy. My answer? Absolutely!
All too frequently, we as a school are brought into conversations and messaging exchanges happening through group chats or social media. Some of what we see is astonishing. The language, the slurs, the obscene langauge, pictures, and memes are deeply disturbing. Even conversation with complete strangers, some of whom are adult aged!
When we become aware of these issues, of course we reach out to the parents, and, when necessary, the Douglas Police Department. We care about our students' safety. The adolescent brain is wired to take chances and seek peer approval, without having the life expereince to know how dangerous a situation could be.
The online world can be a scray place. I humble ask you to check your child's phone. This aritcle, from the Child Rescue Coaltion, will assist you. As always, if you need any help or have any questions, please reach out to us.
Not just a fundraiser for our NJHS-but a chance to build our DMS community.
Literature Circles
Literature Circles
REMINDER: All Middle School students should be reading a book for Literature Circles. We will be meeting with our groups on October 30th to discuss where we are in the books. Please check in with your child to see what they are reading and encourage them to finish the book for the discussion.
We are excited to announce that Douglas Middle School kicked off our Reading Circles today! The whole community met in the auditorium, and every teacher/staff and student were assigned a novel to read for October and November. We divided into small groups and read the first chapter as a group. All students should be reading between 20-30 minutes a day to complete the book.
Why Reading Circles?
To encourage students to read more.
To give students the opportunity to discuss literature with others- (MA ELA listening and speaking standards.)
SEL- Builds community by interacting with others
Discuss with other teachers and students what they are reading.
Our Lost and Found Is Growing
As we move into the cooler weather, our lost and found collection is growing. If you recognize any of the clothing, please remind your child to pick it up. If you write your child's initials on the inside tag, we will have a much better chance of returning the lost item. Also, please label water bottles and lunch bags. We hate to see your hard earn money go to waste.
