Hello Nashoba!

On Wednesday, April 12, 2023 I will present to the Nashoba Regional School Committee enrollment data that will inform the committee of the impact school choice participation would have in our school system. The presentation is intended to inform the committee and give them opportunities to ask questions prior to the hearing. I encourage you to watch the upcoming school committee meeting to learn more about school choice and the impact it has on the school system.

As required by M.G.L. c76 s12b, students from any town in the commonwealth may attend a school in a town in which they don’t reside. The process for enrollment consideration is outlined through the “School Choice” program. School districts have the option to withdraw from the school choice program after a public hearing is held. On April 26, 2023 the Nashoba Regional School Committee will conduct a public hearing to consider the question of withdrawing from the school choice program for the 2023-2024 school year. NRSD has voted to withdraw from the school choice program for the last nine years.

Please join us at the public hearing on April 26, 2023 to offer your feedback on school choice. The public hearing will be held via Zoom, the link will be posted on the School Committee tab on the district website 48 hrs prior to the hearing..

I wish you all a wonderful weekend.

Peace,

Kirk Downing

News from the Department of Pupil Personnel Services News from the Department of Pupil Personnel Services

During the week of May 8, 2023, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Office of Public School Monitoring (PSM) will conduct a Tiered Focused Monitoring Review of the Nashoba Regional School District. The Office of Public School Monitoring visits each district and charter school every three years to monitor compliance with federal and state special education and civil rights regulations. Areas of review related to special education include student assessments, determination of eligibility, the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Team process, and IEP development and implementation. Areas of review related to civil rights include bullying, student discipline, physical restraint, and equal access to school programs for all students.

In addition to the onsite visit, parent outreach is an important part of the review process. The review chairperson from the Office of Public School Monitoring will send all parents of students with disabilities an online survey that focuses on key areas of their child’s special education program. Survey results will contribute to the development of a report. During the onsite review, the Office of Public School Monitoring will interview the chairperson(s) of the district’s Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC). Other onsite activities may include interviews of district staff and administrators, reviews of student records, and onsite observations.

Parents and other individuals may call Corey Steinman, Public School Monitoring Chairperson, at 781-338-3742 to request a telephone interview. If an individual requires an accommodation, such as translation, to participate in an interview, the Department will make the necessary arrangements.

Within approximately 60 business days after the onsite visit, the review chairperson will provide the Nashoba Regional School District with a report with information about areas in which the district meets or exceeds regulatory requirements and areas in which the district requires assistance to correct or improve practices. The public will be able to access the report at http://www.doe.mass.edu/psm/tfm/reports/.

Great Volunteer/Community Service Opportunity – Spring Vacation Week

Emerson Health is running its 7th Annual Learn-to-Bike Camp during Spring Vacation week: April 17-21 at Lawrence Academy in Groton. During bike camp, more than 40 children with special needs are taught by physical therapists and volunteers how to ride a bike! Each camper requires volunteers to help motivate and spot them as they learn to bike. Camp is an amazing experience for all involved. For students interested in careers in health care, physical, occupational, speech therapies, recreation, athletics, and teaching, this is an extraordinary opportunity to make a life-changing difference for children and network with professionals during camp.

To participate, volunteers must be 14 years or older and able to run around a hockey rink (without ice). Volunteers will:

  • Receive training and mentorship during camp from physical therapists
  • Help children with special needs learn to ride a bike – a thrilling experience!
  • Earn community service hours and receive a free t-shirt. Free parking is available.

To learn more about bike camp, watch this ABC TV news story that features campers and volunteers:
