Note from Mr. Simpson
Today, I remember 25 years ago. I remember very small details about that day, when the news broke that a plane, and then planes, had hit the Twin Towers. I thought I had lost my grandparents that day, thankfully I did not, but so many lost their lives that day sacrificing to save others. The fact that our eighth grade spoke with, not to, the entire school today about RESPECT was fitting. I RESPECT the sacrifice that our first responders and so many others made that day.
The 8th grade started with a metaphor. "RESPECT is like looking in a mirror" they said, and then asked the students what they thought that meant. There were multiple responses. Students were engaged by the presentation, and I and the staff here felt they did a great job.
Students spoke about treating others the way they would like to be treated. They asked their peers what would they do today to be RESPECTFUL in various settings. They spoke about caring for the spaces and places here at Newark Street School. They also spoke about being aware of those around them, and that RESPECT was like a two way street.
I thought a lot about this last statement, a two way street.... You know, sometimes I like to crowd the yellow line when there is no one coming, or someone isn't right behind me. I'm relaxed, confident, and often can feela. sense of calm. When a vehicle approaches, I check my mirrors, I look at where I am on the road, making sure to create space for the other car. A vehicle is in the break down lane, I slow down, I see if they need help, and often will stop to make sure.
I loved this thought. When alone, RESPECT is allowing yourself to let your guard down while still being safe. When others are around, be aware, be considerate, allow others their space, be helpful.
They were great!
Next week, grades 7 and 6 will share about RESPONSIBLE.
