The Greendale Pride
Events, Updates, and More

February 2025
Greendale Elementary is a 2024 National ESEA Distinguished School
A team of Greendale educators traveled to Austin, Texas for the National ESEA Conference. While there, Greendale received an award as a 2024 National ESEA Distinguished School. Established in 1996, the Distinguished Schools program highlights exceptional school-level initiatives funded by federal education resources. State Educational Agencies select schools that demonstrate significant success in one of three categories:
1. Exceptional student performance and academic growth
2. Closing the achievement gap between student groups
3. Excellence in serving special populations of students
Greendale was selected for exceptional student performance and academic growth.
Q and U Get Married
The wedding of Q and U took place on Valentine's Day. Mrs. Selvaggi's class bore witness and Mr. Colston officiated the ceremony. Q and U said their vows and joined together to become QU. A reception followed where all of the guests celebrated and enjoyed tasty treats.
Fairy Tale Family Fun Night
Greendale hosted a special family fun night with a theme of fairy tales. The program opened with teachers presenting "reader's theater" versions of various fairy tales in the style of rap music. From there, families broke out into grade levels with their child's teachers and participated in fairy tale themed activities in the classrooms. In addition, parents received information and training for the reading programs being utilized in our school (OG sound deck, LEXIA Core 5, Heggerty/Kilpatrick, UFLI). Families also had the opportunity to browse and shop the Scholastic Book Fair. Each child received a snack bag and free book at the end of the event.
Winners Named in Essay Contest
Fourth grade students across the county were challenged to write a research paper on some aspect of the life of George Washington. The top three students from each elementary school were chosen to have lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Washington at the Martha Washington Inn where the top three students from the county were announced. Greendale’s top three students were Will C, Hunter A, and Lily K, with Will C. winning third place for the county.
Run Club
Run Club is underway for the Spring of 2025. This has become a popular club over the years here at Greendale. Students condition and run after school twice a week and prepare themselves for a 5K which usually occurs in May. This year Abingdon High School's cross country and track coach plans to host a 5K on the Creeper Trail.
Chess Club
Chess Club is an after-school club that is new to Greendale this year. Mr. Anthony is the club sponsor and works with the members to teach how the game is played and game strategy. Students have taken to the game as many will choose to play during lunch and also during times of recess.
