Please give a warm welcome!
It is our great pleasure to introduce you to Valarie Marrs, who is holding down the CLARC front desk etc. as our new CLARC Assistant. Here is her introduction in her own words:
My background is in Language Arts and literacy intervention, and I recently completed a Reading Endorsement. Having been part of Portland Catholic Schools for many years as both an educator and a parent, I’m looking forward to getting to know everyone, collaborating with colleagues, and being part of this very special community. Outside of work, I enjoy walking my two dogs, spending time near the water, especially the Northern Oregon Coast, and experimenting in the kitchen to create "healthy", sugar-free desserts and snacks!
Please stop by and introduce yourself to Valarie when you have a moment!
Sincerely,
The CLARC team

Upcoming Events:
- Diwali begins on Sunday and is one of the most important festivals celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists. Known as the "festival of lights," it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness. It’s a time to celebrate family, friendship, and prosperity. Many people decorate their homes with lights and rangoli, a form of artwork made with colored powder or sand, and exchange gifts and sweets with loved ones. Happy Diwali! Come to the HFSU during FLEX on TUESDAY to help celebrate Diwali!
- Dia de los Muertos: Dia de los Muertos is a vibrant Mexican holiday celebrated each year from November 1 to 2 where families welcome back the souls of their deceased relatives for a joyous reunion. The DEI office will have our yearly ofrenda for Dia de los Muertos in the CLARC starting October 29th-November 13th. Please bring photos and memorabilia of loved ones who have passed to add to the ofrenda.
- Spanish Translation for Parent + Teacher Conferences: The Spanish Language Support Team will be helping to translate conferences for Spanish-speaking families on November 5+6th. If you received an email about translation, then one of us will join you to help interpret. Please let DEI know if you have any questions.
- Social Justice Week: We are starting to plan Social Justice Week a little earlier this year. This year’s theme will be Fair Share: Economic Justice. If you know anyone (a friend or family member) who may be willing and able to present about their work, please fill out this form by November 11th so we can start to plan. https://forms.gle/2zHs9DH6mXHGf8L66 If you are interested in presenting, stay tuned for a different form!
This Month:
- Native American Heritage Month was officially recognized by George H.W. Bush in 1990 following advocacy that began in the early 1900s from Indigenous communities for a national day of recognition. Celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Indigenous communities, please join in celebrating in Portland or learning about native communities in Portland or the greater nation.

- The grade level
- How many questions you want, and whether they should be multiple choice, short answer, or reflection.
If you have never used FLINT make sure your classes are published and share the Exit Ticket link with students.
FLINT will give you a quick assessment of the student responses.
