Grade 8 STUCO Dance - January 19th
HMS is excited to host an 8th grade dance on January 19th from 6-8pm at the Middle School. We will have a DJ and dancing in the gym, with concessions for sale and a movie hangout in the cafeteria for when students need a place to chill. The cost of the dance is $5 and permission is required. Please fill out this form by no later than 5:00pm on January 18th.
Attire for the event is "dress up or dress down". While students are encouraged to "look nice," this is not a formal or semi-formal dance like they might experience in High School. In keeping with creating a safe and inclusive event for all HMS students, we are discouraging "dates" and would instead encourage students to come with friends or on their own.
Just Talk About It: Adolescent Mental Health
Jon Mattleman will be presenting for parents only on January 17th as part of a two part program sponsored by the HPTO. We hope that you will attend. The second part of the program for students will be in school on Friday, January 26th.
Screenagers Under the Influence - January 9th
Westborough Connects has invited Hopkinton families to a screening of:
Screenagers Under the Influence: Addressing Vaping, Drugs and Alcohol in the Digital Age
Tuesday January 9th - 7:00-9:00
Westborough High School
The program will screen the film Screenagers Under the Influence. It is the third film in the Screenagers series and its focus is on substance use and addiction. It looks at how companies and media try to influence our childrens' decisions regarding substance use - particularly through social media, what is the science behind addiction, and what parents/caregivers and other adults can do to help with prevention and education. The film's producers explain: "While most documentaries about substance use focus on severe addiction, Screenagers Under The Influence fills a pressing need for a film that explores more common scenarios. The film is grounded in teens’ current reality of being flooded by images on social media, movies, and TV shows about vaping, drugs, and alcohol." Here is a 2.5 minute trailer: https://youtu.be/kOia6d4demo?si=9tLnlPhBMiisLSLG.
WPS Director of Wellness Roger Anderson will provide an overview of Westborough substance use data from the Metrowest Health Foundation survey and local pediatrician Dr. Safdar Medina will be available for questions. You can learn more and register here: http://tinyurl.com/emfycuf7.
