Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS Message from Nicole Pease, Principal Teacher at DCS

Happy Friday DCS families, I hope your week has been a good one. It has been great to have some new snow, I just hope the temperatures continue to be in our favor so we can get out and enjoy it each day. Art Teacher Justin Bentley-Melle was here and excitedly took on the Art to Remember Project. In a few weeks, information will be coming home to you regarding art work your student created and projects made from the art.

The focus for the next month is the District Budget. Please consider attending the Deliberative Session at ConVal on February 4th at 7pm to learn more about the warrant articles being voted upon in March. Also, there will be a meeting at DCS to discuss the Petitioned Warrant Article on Feb 11th at 7pm.

This is not the best weather for Winter Fun Day, but we will make the most of it! Thanks to all the parents who have provided snacks for the students, we appreciate it!

Have a super weekend, Nicole

DCS Art, January 2025 DCS Art, January 2025

This week our DCS artists focused on color and clarity in their Art to Remember designs. They also worked with form and texture as they modeled sculptures. Students worked with clay, paint, and glue.

I look forward to continuing with our DCS artists when I return for the week of March 24th.

Thank you for supporting creativity!

4th and 5th graders have been digging into fractions! We have looked at fractions within recipes and explored how to use multiplication of fractions to double and triple the recipes. This real world connection made the process fun and easy to picture. The 4th graders are learning about addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. The 5th grade is also adding and subtracting fractions, but with unlike denominators and mixed numbers.

In Social Studies, both groups are creating a book about their grade specific topics. The 4th grade is researching each of New Hampshire's state symbols. 5th grade is doing a book study of "George vs George: The Revolutionary War as Seen from Both Sides" written by Rosalyn Schanzer. These projects include summarizing readings, discussions and/or videos and then illustrating their summaries. I find it so interesting to see their creativity shine.

The 3rd grade math class continues to memorize their multiplication tables. We have looked at adding and subtracting numbers within 1,000 with visuals, a place value algorithm and with the standard algorithm. By looking at the processes from several strategies, the students understand the meaning of carrying and regrouping, but it also allows them to find an algorithm that works best for their way of understanding these processes.

The terrific third graders have been busy knitting! We have three finished hats! These children will start to knit an animal or doll while the other children continue to knit their hats enthusiastically. Thank you to our loyal knitting volunteer helpers Carrie, Pam, Hejera, Penny, Kristi, Erin, Brian, and Kari. They come in at different times to support this project.

For Language Arts, as a class, the children enjoy reading our literature book, Because of Winn Dixie. This week, we worked on vocabulary, learned what sympathy means, and practiced using a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast our story. The children are starting a unit on opinion writing with Mystery Writing. They are working on the many different ways to write long a and /ear/.

For our study of Dublin, the third graders interviewed the fire chief, Tom Vanderbilt, and several police officers, including Chief Suokko and Addy’s father, Sargent Dalterio. They will use the responses to write their four favorite facts in complete, detailed sentences.

The students have picked poems to memorize and recite at our 3/4/5 Poetry Recital at 11:1!5 am on Friday, February 21st.

4th/5th English Language Arts -

The students also chose poems to memorize and recite on Friday, the 21st! We have worked on prepositions, the doubling rule, and the long a and /ear/spellings for word study. Learning about similies while writing about a mysterious sea creature onboard a pirate ship was a big hit. The students continue to read their literature group book study, working on comprehension skills and story elements. Through Mystery Writing, we are starting our Opinion Writing unit with a pre-writing assessment.

Please note: Your child’s January reading log is due Monday, February 2nd. Also, remember to have your child read and practice their poem daily.

We have gotten a jump start on Presidents Day in first and second grades. We are beginning our study by learning all about our first president. We are using "two-column notes" to help us organize our information. The students are learning a new song to memorize the presidents and the US States! In phonics, we play lots of games including "Write the room" to help us remember our "heart words" which are words we need to memorize by heart since they don't follow the rules.

Chief Suokko read the book, "Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed" by Emily Pearson. This book talks about how spreading kindness starts with one person, but then the kindness acts can multiply! First and Second Grades began our spreading kindness mission by decorating a plate with many different colored hearts. We then filled the plate with goodies for Chief Suokko. The students were so excited to present the plate to Chief filled with egg penguins! Chief will make some goodies to replenish the plate and then pass the plate to another Dublin resident. We will keep this plate circulating around Dublin to spread kindness! We can't wait to hear where this plate goes!

Kindergarteners, first, and second graders enjoyed hearing Chief Suokko read, Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson. In the story, Ordinary Mary decides to pick some blueberries and gives them to her neighbor. This act of kindness inspires a cascade of good deeds and the ripple effect is felt around the world! We decided that we should spread some love around Dublin! K-2 classroom decorated a kindness plate and baked a bread and presented it to May Clark, former DCS principal. May will pass on the plate and our hope is that each classroom's plate will reach 10 people before coming back to DCS. Kindness matters!

Kindergarteners enjoyed retelling the story of The Mitten, adapted by Jan Brett. They sewed together a mitten and added the characters inside. Ask your child to retell the story for you!

In math, kinders are looking at models to determine if the model is demonstrating addition or subtraction. The big math vocabulary word is expression. They are little 'mathemagicians' in the making!

Recently, there have been numerous student requests for cough drops. As cough drops are considered medication, I am asking for your help in following the ConVal policy on medication administration at the elementary level. To do this, any medication, including cough drops, must be delivered to the school by a parent/guardian or their designated responsible adult in the original container. A written permission form is also required which is available at DCS.

Please reach out to me at pmurphy@conval.edu if you have any questions.
