A Note from Dr. Neubeck

Nurturing Skills for Success: A Focus on Authentic Experiences

Every day in our classrooms, teachers and students collaborate to build essential skills that will serve students throughout their educational journey and beyond. From kindergarten to grade 12, our schools provide authentic learning experiences designed to develop the 6C’s: Character, Citizenship, Collaboration, Creativity, Communication, and Critical Thinking.

Our dedicated staff strives to create meaningful, real-world opportunities while guiding students as they take ownership of their projects and learning outcomes. At Byron Middle School, for instance, Design Studio classes employ design thinking to craft items for sale both at school and in local businesses. Funds raised from these efforts are reinvested into the community—most recently, students created signage for the miniature golf course in Byron.

At Byron High School, students merge academics with entrepreneurship through innovative initiatives. A collaborative project between Family and Consumer Science and Business classes enables students to run a food truck business. This hands-on learning experience allows them to apply classroom knowledge at school lunches, sports games, and community locations.

Thanks to a grant for a walk-in cooler, Byron High School has expanded its entrepreneurial offerings to include a meat processing business. This exciting new venture, developed by students and staff, represents yet another way our schools integrate education with practical application. As Mr. Jestus explains:

"B-Town Meats is the official Custom Exempt Meat Processing business run by Mr. Jestus at the High School. Students and Mr. Jestus have obtained the most difficult and highly inspected venison processing license available through the Department of Agriculture. This is a real world, relevant business that students have really taken a liking to. Students are learning the ins and outs of skinning, butchering, processing, sharpening, disinfecting and sanitizing as it relates to the meat processing industry. Students are getting hands-on experience and having fun all at once. One of the best things about this class is that it creates revenue to then put back into the experience. As we generate revenue, we can update equipment further and create even more opportunities to expand the business. The kids have the vision, I am just facilitating the experience. Please email isaac.jestus@byron.k12.mn.us for any questions or inquiries about cooler space."

Happy American Education Week!
