Principals' Message
Dear SCS Families and Caregivers,
Things are officially "peeping" with excitement in our Grade 1–4 classrooms! In partnership with New Village Farm, our students are pecking deeply into an integrated unit on chicks that brings science and literacy to life in a hands-on way. As we monitor our incubators, students are acting as young biologists—researching life cycles through non-fiction texts and building a specialized vocabulary that includes terms like incubation and embryo. It is truly a joy to see them step into their roles as "chick experts," using their reading skills to understand the biological milestones happening just beneath the shell.
The learning extends well beyond biology as we put our math and writing skills to work in the "coop." Students are busy making predictions and graphs to track incubation, while their daily observation journals are filling up with descriptive reflections and procedural guides on chick care. This interdisciplinary approach allows our students to see how data and documentation function in the real world. We are so grateful for this partnership with the farm, which provides an egg-ceptional way for our children to connect their classroom lessons to the living world around them. Watch for a CVSD write-up on this inspiring unit and see below for some (admittedly grainy) photos of the chicks. The photos are clickable and link to a video taken this morning.
With March Madness underway, we also have some photos from the annual 8th grade students vs. staff basketball game! It was a great entree for the PTO's 3 on 3 tournament tomorrow. We hope to see many of you there. While we love seeing kids engage in physical activity, please remember that the gyms are for the sole use of Part 2 or SCS athletics after school. As much as they may want to shoot around, we can't have students in those spaces for supervision and safety reasons. Thank you for your understanding and support in finding positive after school activities for our kids!
In partnership,
Antonia, Jen and Brett
