Food for Thought....

A Letter from Mr. Savage

Whew! What a crazy two weeks it has been! It seems that the bad weather seems to follow the same schedule as the TVL Basketball Tournament but that is generally just one day. This year, snow and frigid temperatures made the TVL change the tournament bracket not once but several times to accommodate the games! We need to give a big shout out to Tony Yungeberg, who made sure we had transportation available, and to our coaches, our players and our fans for being flexible. As I write this, we still have three days of action left and both of our teams are still competing for the championship. If your looking to watch some quality basketball then I recommend the TVL Tournament this year! Both the boy’s and girl’s brackets have quality teams from top to bottom which makes for some exciting finishes!

Speaking of inclement weather! One of the toughest decisions a school district can make is when we have to cancel or shorten the school day because of inclement weather. I have seen a sunny, cold day turn into blizzard like conditions in just a few hours and then we are faced with the task of getting students home safely. I have also seen a snow day turn into a much more pleasant day and then we have people wondering why we gave our students the day off. Highways and town roads might be passable but country roads are drifted shut! The bottom line is student safety! We realize that not everyone agrees with the decisions that are made but I do guarantee our parents and patrons that great care is taken when these types of decisions are made!

At the January Board of Education meeting a new policy was put into place that will limit a student’s meal account to a negative $50.00. At that time the students will be asked to bring a meal from home until the outstanding bill is paid in full. A student may also choose to pay for a school meal on a day-to-day basis until the account is back to $0.00. A letter will be sent to each of our families that will outline the new policy and answer any questions that they may have about the new policy. A copy of that policy is posted in this edition of our newsletter.

Activity wise we are wrapping up our TVL Tournament this week and will go right into the Jr. High BVL Tournament which starts on Monday, January 22nd! We will have that bracket posted as soon as it becomes available. The second half of the basketball season will get underway next week as well and it will not be long before we are thinking about post-season play! Thanks for supporting our Mustangs!

We would like to take the time to say thank you to our maintenance and custodial crew out here at Valley Heights for all the extra work they have been doing these past two weeks with our snowy weather. They have been working hard to keep our sidewalks clean and pushing snow in our parking lots so staff, students and visitors have available parking. All of this on top of their daily duties makes them all gold star winners in my book! Team members include Ryan Bishop, Clayton Reed, Jamie LeSage, Amber Swearingen and Monica Sump! Thanks for taking care of us here at Valley Heights!

Have a great week!

Too Good not to post for one more week!!! Too Good not to post for one more week!!!

25 years Later......

Our own, Mr. Nolte, has completed one of his many tasks that staff at Valley Heights add to their schedule every year. (It may have taken 25 years to accomplish, hehe!) Mr. Nolte is always busy coaching or helping with books/stats during football and basketball seasons at Valley Heights. But the other night, he stepped out of his normal roll and joined staff and students in the concession stand to help serve the community during the basketball game. Shout out to Mr. Nolte and the rest of the staff that pitched in on this evening. All in for the Mustangs!
