About Health Services

March Reminder: March Reminder:

Kindergarten and 2nd grade parents please be on the look out for dental reminders. If your child does not have an up to date dental exam on file in the health office you will or have already received a reminder letter. The dental examination is required for your child to be in compliance with Illinois School Health requirements.

For your child to be in compliance with School health requirements, one of the following must be completed before May 10, 2026

· Submit a completed dental form. A dental exam, performed by a licensed dentist, and completed in the last 18 months.

· Complete a “waiver” form. The Illinois Department of Public Health has established a waiver for children who show undue burden or lack of access to a dentist.

· Provide an appointment card. Parents or legal guardians must present proof that the dental examination will take place within 60 days after May 10.

If you have any questions regarding the dental health requirements, please contact the Health Office at Bell Graham Elementary (331-228-2104). A dental examination report form can be downloaded from the district website under the Departments tab or Parent/Community tab.

When to keep your child home When to keep your child home

Consider keeping your child at home for an extra day of rest and observation if he or she has any of the following symptoms:

  • Very stuffy or runny nose and/or cough

  • Mild sore throat (no fever, no known exposure to strep)

  • Headache

  • Mild stomach ache

Definitely keep your child at home for treatment and observation if he or she has any of these symptoms:

  • Fever (greater than 100 degrees)

  • Vomiting (even once)

  • Diarrhea

  • Chills

  • General malaise or feelings of fatigue

  • Frequent congested or croupy (barky) cough

  • Lots of nasal congestion with frequent blowing of nose

To help prevent the flu and other colds, teach your children good hygiene habits:

● Wash hands frequently

● Do not touch eyes, nose or mouth

● Cover mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing, use a paper tissue, throw it away and then wash hands

● Avoid close contact with people who are ill

Colds are the most contagious during the first 48 hours. A child who has a fever should remain at home until "fever free" for a minimum of 24 hours without medication. A child who has started antibiotics needs to be on medication for 24 hours before being considered non-contagious and able to return to school. Keeping your ill child at home will minimize the spread of infections and viruses in the classroom.

Medication Medication

If your child requires medication during school hours, every effort should be made to administer the medication at home. However, if your Health Care Provider (HCP) determines that it is in your child’s best interest to take medication (either prescription or over-the-counter) during school hours, a D303 Medication Authorization Form must be completed and signed by the parent/guardian and the HCP and then submitted to the school nurse.

  • A Medication Authorization Form is required for each prescription or non-prescription medication, including cough drops, to be administered at school
  • Medication must be brought to school in its original container by a parent or responsible adult designee
  • Under no circumstances will the nurses administer any medication that is sent to school in baggies, envelopes, etc.
  • When controlled medications are dropped off at school, the medicine will be counted/measured by the nurse in the presence of the parent or designee and then signed off by both parties before being accepted
  • If necessary, the school nurse will contact the prescribing HCP to clarify the medication order or to consult with the HCP regarding the student’s reaction to the medication
  • A student may carry and self administer his/her own Quick-Relief Asthma Inhaler, Epinephrine Auto-Injector and/or Pancreatic Enzymes provided that a Self-Administration Parent Authorization form is on file in the school health office and all other requirements have been met
  • A parent or responsible adult designee must pick up any remaining medication by the last day of school. All medication not picked up at the end of the school year will be discarded
