Parent-Teacher Conferences are Coming Up!

Our fall parent-teacher conferences are on Thursday, October 19th from 3-6 PM and Friday, October 30th from 8 AM - 12 PM. We ask that all parents sign up to meet with their child's homeroom teachers. You can discuss progress, and if your child is in kindergarten - 8th grade, you will also receive your child's first quarter report card and fall achievement test information. If your child is in early childhood, you will take a look at your child's progress in their portfolios.

You will be receiving an email this week with a google spreadsheet sign-up sheet. There will be a choice of twenty minute time slots. Please choose the one that works for you. If none of the times available work for you, please be sure to contact your child's homeroom teacher to schedule a different time. Middle school parents, you can also sign up for any teachers you would like to meet with to discuss progress in certain content areas if needed.

Uniform Exchange Closet

Our uniform exchange closet is intended to help families exchange clothing sizes as children outgrow their uniforms. Please take only the items your child currently needs and be mindful of leaving enough for other families. The closet is intended primarily for exchanging sizes as children grow, rather than serving as a source for stocking up on large quantities of clothing. This is a shared resource for our school community, and we appreciated everyone's help in keeping it stocked and available for all who need it. Thank you!

Lutheran Schools Bible Bowl 2026

Bible Bowl Information 2026

Practice Begins October 14

Bible Bowl practice will begin Wednesday, October 14, and will be held every Wednesday from 3:00–4:30 p.m. in the library.

Students will practice questions, learn the competition format, strengthen their Bible knowledge, and prepare to compete as a team. Whether you competed last year or this will be your first Bible Bowl, we would love to have you join us!

Teams will consist of 3–5 students and compete in three divisions:

Grades 3–4 • Grades 5–6 • Grades 7–8

Whether we bring home first place or not, we will celebrate our students and all their hard work after the competition! A celebration will be held at a location to be determined, and more information will be shared as we get closer to Bible Bowl.

Competition: Saturday, November 14, 2026
Time: 10:00 a.m. — students should arrive by 9:45 a.m.
Location: Our Savior’s Lutheran School, Springfield Bible Bowl Information 2026

Adult Volunteer Needed!

I am also looking for an adult who would be interested in helping with Bible Bowl practices and the team this year, with the goal of eventually taking over leadership of the Bible Bowl program in the future.

Interested in Joining the Team?

If your student is interested in joining the Trinity Bible Bowl Team, please email or text Chuck Moore: 217-891-1956 mrchuckmoore@gmail.com. Let’s learn God’s Word, have some fun, and defend that title!

Second Quarter Project - About Grace Food Pantry

As Christ fed the multitudes, the mission of the Grace Lutheran Church Food Pantry is to feed the hungry.

According to the Feeding America organization, at any given time some 25,000 people in Sangamon County aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from. That means 12 percent of the county lives with “food insecurity.”

The all-volunteer Grace Lutheran Food Pantry, located in the basement of Grace Lutheran Church in downtown Springfield, has been providing food to the hungry for nearly 50 years. The Pantry is a partner agency of the Central Illinois Food Bank.

In 2019 - the last full year pre-pandemic - the Pantry served more than 6,300 households and 13,000 individuals. Nearly one-fourth of clients are senior citizens and more than one-third are children. Anyone who needs food can come to the Pantry without referral and receive non-perishable foods, as well as meat, milk, bread, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables (in season) and toiletries. We also customize bags for the homeless with foods that do not need cooking or can openers and personal items.

We have no paid staff, no overhead costs, no government funding and rely entirely on the time and talents of 60 volunteers and in-kind and cash donations from local churches, community organizations, schools and individuals. In-kind donations of space, utilities and support services are provided by Grace Lutheran.

12 Week GriefShare Support/Recovery Group

Grief is a painful process. Trinity wants to help and will offer GriefShare starting Tuesdays, 3/9/27-5/25/27 from 1-3pm. At this 12-week support/recovery group program, you’ll discover what to expect in the days ahead and what’s “normal” in grief. At the meetings, you will view a video featuring counselors, pastors, and healthcare professionals on grief-related topics, plus you’ll hear personal stories of grief. Everyone will receive a free workbook. There is no cost to attend. Please pre-register to make sure we have enough workbooks for everyone. GriefShare group participants have repeatedly shared that they feel comforted and feel a sense of relief when they’re given guidance and tips on how to deal with the daily challenges. This is an opportunity to be around people who understand what you are feeling. For more details, and to pre-register visit griefshare.org. Or contact Lori Schlosser at #217-341-4582 or trinitygriefshare@yahoo.com

Blood Drive

Trinity will be hosting a blood drive with Impact Life on Saturday, February 13, 2027 from 9:30am until 2:00pm. Appointments for donors will be set when the drive is closer.

Parenting the Love and Logic Way Parenting the Love and Logic Way

“That’s Not the Way We Do Things in This House!" “That’s Not the Way We Do Things in This House!"

Sometimes parents get so exasperated with their teenagers that they shout things like, “That’s not the way we do things in this house!” Those could be the words of parents frustrated by their teen’s growing need for independence or a teen trying to establish their own identity. Either way, the words reflect an all too common battle of wills between parents and teens.

As teens grow up, they naturally begin to develop values and identities of their own. One of the greatest gifts we can give them is the opportunity to become responsible adults. This means giving them enough room to make their own decisions and live with the consequences.

The more we try to control our teens, the more they will try to assert themselves. There is no way to guarantee that teens will make wise choices. We can raise the odds by offering our thoughts and love and helping them understand the consequences of serious mistakes. Here are some ways parents can reduce power struggles and help their teens develop responsibility.

Keep Communication Open With Teens

When teens find themselves in difficult situations, it can help to talk with a nonjudgmental adult. Being a good listener does not mean you approve of your teen’s actions. However, the more we listen with empathy, the more likely they are to think through their decisions.

Limit Criticism and Restrictions

When we are too critical or restrictive, teens often become defensive. They may spend more time defending themselves than thinking about their choices and the possible consequences. Wise parents focus more on helping their teens consider their options than simply restricting their activities.

Make Enforceable Rules for Teens

Parents are left powerless when they make rules they cannot enforce. Effective rules focus on things parents can actually control rather than depending on a teenager’s cooperation. Grounding is a common example of an unenforceable rule that many teens refuse to follow.

Let Consequences Teach

It is tempting to rescue our teens from mistakes, but they can learn valuable lessons by living with the consequences of their choices. Wise parents respond with empathy instead of anger and allow those consequences to do the teaching.

For example, teens with poor driving records can be required to pay for their own car insurance if they want to continue driving the family car. Parents might choose to pay the premiums when teens get good grades, do their chores, and treat them with respect.

The Love and Logic approach is to let consequences be the “bad guy” so parents can remain the “good guy” and avoid unnecessary battles and power struggles.

When teens push back, it’s easy for everyday disagreements to turn into power struggles. In our new audio, Defiance: What Really Works, you will learn how to respond calmly, reduce arguing, and set limits in ways that encourage responsibility rather than more resistance.

Thanks for reading!
