Next week, we’re continuing our Second Unit, “The Recipe for Success,” by exploring texts that show how resilience, deliberate practice, and caring for others help people achieve their goals. These readings will guide students as they answer our essential question: What does it take to achieve success?
As always, please encourage your scholar to read for at least 20 minutes each night. All students should have a book they are independently reading outside of class.
Library Resources
Please help us with our Battle of the Books Wishlist at Politics and Prose!
This wishlist is to support the Battle of the Books competition and reading initiative at Deal MS for school year 2025-26.
The goal is to purchase 20 copies of the books for the school and encourage families to purchase additional copies for individual use. Battle of the Books is a great way to encourage our students to read award-winning books and test their knowledge in a friendly competition with their peers! We hope to have both a schoolwide competition with teams from each grade competing to determine which students will advance to the district wide competition. You can learn more about the district competition here:
https://dcla.org/DCLA-Battle-of-the-Books
We hope to provide every student at Deal with access to these titles and participate in the Battle of the Books, a schoolwide trivia contest! Please help us support this initiative by purchasing books for the school at the Politics and Prose Alice Deal Book Fair on November 16th or online by using the wishlist link below:

Math with Mx. Gomez
6th Grade Accelerated Math
Next week in Math 6, we’ll focus on percent and proportional reasoning. Students will learn how to use the proportional method to find the part, the whole, and the percentage, then apply these skills to real-world situations like discounts and original prices. We’ll wrap up with a percent practice day and review stations to reinforce understanding and prepare for upcoming assessments.
7th Grade Math
Next week in Math 7, we’ll finish Unit 1 and transition into Unit 3. Monday covers Lesson 10, and Tuesday is our Summative Assessment for Unit 1. After that, we’ll kick off Unit 3 with Lessons 1–4, introducing new concepts and building a strong foundation for the next unit.
Please encourage your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out if they need support.

World Geography and Cultures with Ms. Wesselhoft
Your students did presentations about how some people, events, or items represent the African Diaspora here in the United States. They did a great job! Be on the lookout - I will try to share the presentations with you.
Next week we start Unit 3: Middle East and North Africa. Students will map the region, learn new physical features vocabulary that apply to the region, and identify some physical and human features. Students will end the week reviewing for a Middle East and North Africa quiz on Monday, November 24th. If you plan to leave town early, your child will need to take the quiz on Friday, November 21st.
Coming home – a permission slip to sign and return for the Geography Three Religions field trip.
Earth and Space Science with Ms. Sagan
Hello Scientists!
Another short week done! Next week we will be completing our Rock Transformation unit. We will start the week with our Mount Play Doh topography assignment before we spend a few days on topographic maps and contour lines. This includes a lab in which students use play dough to illustrate how topographic maps take 3D shapes and represent them on paper.
Students will complete their Amplify End of Unit assessment and then conclude the week with their Rock Transformation Summative assessment on Friday.
Blookets!
Blookets are a fantastic tool to help students study. There are currently 4 Blooket links posted to Canvas for students to take advantage of.
The Blooket named "Rock Transformation Blooket" will help them study for their summative on Friday, and the Blooket named "Amplify - Rock Transformation Blooket" will help them study for their Amplify EOU assessment (for district data) on Thursday.
Students should make sure to prioritize the regular Rock Transformation Blooket, but they should also attempt the Amplify version as well!
Roots!
Students will have their Term 2, Week 3 Roots Quiz on Thursday due to the summative. They’ll be tested on the following root words, which we will review in class:
e/ec/ex = without/from/out of (think escape, eclipse, exit)
inter = among, between (think interstellar, interstate)
-ist = one who studies (think scientist, geologist, zoologist)
peri = around (think perimeter, periphery)
multi = many (think multitude, multigrain, multiply)
Keepers: equi, geo, vacu, cent, kilo, octo
Please encourage your student to review these root words as well as the keepers for the quiz.
Notes from MLL Support
Last week students completed their rewrites for the ACCESS writing practice after receiving feedback from one-on-one conferences. They resumed teacher-led station for the key vocabulary of a speaking practice for ACCESS from their HMH books for Friday. Students conducted recordings for the second round of ACCESS speaking practice on Friday and will continue next week for feedback and revisions.

Library Corner
Mr. Reichlen has created a new web collection of school and public library links to support the novel lists for independent reading texts from the CommonLit 360 ELA curriculum. Here students can find access points to all of the catalog records for recommended texts that support each of this year's unit themes organized by grade level and unit. Students can checkout and place items on hold. The collection will be updated throughout the school year to provide access to recommended titles as units change.
