BEH Weekly Family Message
August 31, 2026
Hello BEH Panthers!!
We had a great start to our school year with our first three days last week and now our first Monday of the school year under our belt. We are working to get everyone back into our school routines. Getting up early and pushing through all the hard work of the school day has got us all dragging a bit, but the more we can stick with our routines, the stronger we will get as we work our way deeper into this school year.
It has been great to see the ongoing excitement for the swings and the great job our students are doing around taking turns and making safe choices. Ms. Smith and the classroom teachers have continued to teach and reinforce the expectations in these first few days and it is clearly paying off.
Our primary goals this year at BEH are around improving our attendance and focusing on increasing our academic rigor, particularly in the areas of math and literacy. In order to achieve these goals, we are going to need your collaboration. Please help us to get your students to school everyday and try to make appointments after 2:30 whenever possible, so that they do not miss any instruction. Additionally, please check those take home folders that will be coming home every Tuesday to review how your student is doing in math and literacy.
You can check below for more information on our weekly communication folders and much more info that will support our work in the weeks ahead:
BEH PTA Updates:
Greetings from the PTA!
We are delighted to kick off the school year with new playground updates. Students seem to be enjoying the swings and the new mural looks great too. Many thanks to everyone that supported the PTA in moving forward with these big projects.
Our first meeting of the year is Tuesday, September 8th at 5:30. This is a hybrid meeting that will be in person at school in the library or you can join the online meeting here: https://tinyurl.com/BEHPTA2627. Mark your calendars now, it will be our first day back after a long Labor Day weekend. We look forward to seeing you there.
September 16th is our first fundraising event. The PTA has partnered with Tea Loft for our first “dine in” event. We bring the customers and Tea Loft shares the proceeds with the PTA. It is the same day as the early release, so it could be the perfect time to treat yourself to a refreshing boba tea and support the PTA at the same time!

Seeking Volunteers for the '26-'27 School Year:
Looking for a meaningful way to support your community? Boise-Eliot/Humboldt Elementary is seeking caring, reliable volunteers to spend time with our students each week.
We're looking for volunteers who can make a weekly (or more frequent) commitment for one school quarter (Fall quarter is August 26 - December 18) in one of these roles:
- Reading Support
8:00–8:20 a.m.
Help young readers build confidence by reading one-on-one. Students at BEH start every school day with quiet time for reading called Soft Start. Students with emerging reading skills benefit from reading to a supportive adult.
- Lunch & Recess Support
10:50–11:50 a.m.
Spend time with students during lunch and recess by encouraging positive play, supporting relationship skills, and helping create a fun, welcoming environment.
Whether you're a college student looking for experience with students, a retiree with time to share, or a community member who enjoys working with children, your consistent presence can make a lasting impact.
All volunteers must complete a free Portland Public Schools background check before getting started. It is valid for three years and takes a couple weeks to process.
Please send your interest and any questions to info@behpta.org. We'd love to welcome you to the BEH community!
Upcoming Events & Information:
Weekly Communication Folders:
At BEH we send home communication folders every Tuesday in student backpacks. These folders will typically contain the following every week:
- Weekly newsletter from the teachers
- Graded literacy and math work
- An academic activity for your to engage with your student at home
- Any flyers, permission slips, or other pertinent information
Please have your student get out their folders and share them with you each Tuesday after school. Keep all of the provided newsletters, graded work, and informational flyers. Then return the folder by Friday with any permission slips or homework completed and stuffed back in the folder.
School Bus:
Breakfast & Lunch Menu:
A BEH parent shared this link with me. It allows you to add the PPS lunch menu to your calendar if it is helpful and other ways to access the menu if you want to keep track as you plan meals or if you have a child that likes to know ahead of time what they are eating that day.
Kindergarten Launch:
Today was our first day with all of our kindergarten attending together. We were still missing some students that we expect to start attending soon, but it was definitely a good day for students getting used to the routines and working on that anxiety around separating from parents, getting to know new trusted adults, and learning new routines.
PK Launch:
We are excited to get PK started this week as well. We will have our two PK classes starting fully this Thursday. It will be fun to see all of our classes full and our students back in the building for the last two days of this week.
Principal Connect:
Our first Principal Connect is this Friday @ 8:00 AM in the staff lounge, just behind the office. Stop by right after dropping off your student to ask Mr. Kaveh any questions you may have and hear what we are working on in the coming weeks at BEH. These opportunities are monthly on the first Friday of each month.
Uniforms:
We continue to be a uniform school. This means that Monday-Thursday at BEH all students need to wear a solid blue, yellow, or white collared shirt or a school provided t-shirt and khaki or dark blue pants, skirt, dress, or shorts. If you could use some support with uniforms we are able to provide two uniforms for students. Just stop by the office and we can work on getting your student the correct sizes. If you have uniforms that your students have grown out of that are still in good condition that you would like to donate, we also collect these in the office to support future students. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have questions before the year starts.
