Winter Recess and Sledding

As winter begins, there are some different options available for students. Once enough snow has accumulated, sledding is an option for students in grades 2-5. The rules for sledding are that students must have full snow gear to participate (coat, snowpants, hat, gloves, boots). Students must sled feet first only at school. We use soft mat sleds which have been provided by the PTO. We have utilized the side of the retention pond closest to the parking lot. This option is available when there is available supervision and conditions allow. If you prefer for this not to be an option for your student, please let the office know.

In order to play in the snow (rolling around, building in the field, etc.), students must have full gear: winter coat, snowpants, boots, hat, gloves. We want all students to be able to enjoy winter recess. A note on snowpants: a water resistant outer shell that keeps your pants pretty dry, qualifies as snowpants for us. We want all our Bulldogs to have fun in the snow. If there is a financial hardship that makes some of this equipment difficult to attain, please contact the school office.

The main playfield and slope of the retention pond closest to the playfield is designated for snow play. The blacktop is available for ball play until icy conditions make it unsafe. The playground is available for play but when conditions warrant, snow gear is normally needed during the winter.

While students can build, roll, slide and play in the snow, there is no snow ball throwing at school. Recess is held outdoors until the windchill (feels like) temperature goes below 0. When this occurs, the school will move to indoor recess. When this occurs for morning line-up, the RED FLAG is placed at the front entrance of the school. This is the signal that weather is too inclement for outdoor play and we are coming inside.

Reminder about Food Allergies and Sensitivities

As we enter the holiday season, many classrooms and grade levels will celebrate with special activities, treats, and events. This is always a joyful time of year, but it’s also important that we keep all students and staff safe by being mindful of allergies and sensitivities. Some of the most common allergens among children include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, and certain fruits such as strawberries or kiwi. In addition, we have students and staff with latex allergies, which can be triggered by contact with latex balloons, gloves, or other materials. Even small exposures to these allergens can cause serious reactions for some individuals.

To help keep our celebrations safe and inclusive, please take a few extra precautions. Before sending in food or treats, check with your child’s teacher about classroom-specific allergy information. Whenever possible, choose prepackaged items with clear ingredient labels or consider non-food treats such as stickers, pencils, or small games. Please also avoid bringing latex balloons or other latex materials into the school. Be sure that surfaces and hands are thoroughly washed before and after handling food, and avoid cross-contamination by keeping allergy-safe foods separate from others.

Thank you for helping us create a safe and welcoming environment for all of our students.

SEPAC Advisory Committee (Special Education Parent Advisory Committee)

(Special Education Parent Advisory Committee)is hosting community engagement sessions for parents and guardians of students receiving special education services in District 220. These sessions will provide a space to share your family's experiences with Inclusion—what’s working well, and where we can grow together. Inclusion promotes equal access to all that a school offers by removing barriers and providing necessary accommodations both in and out of the classroom to support all students. Our goal is to listen and learn from families to better understand how inclusion is currently being experienced and explore ways to continue strengthening inclusive practices across the district.
