Dear Talley Street Community,
I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break! As we begin the second semester, we’d like to remind families that during arrival and dismissal, only right-hand turns are permitted when entering and exiting the school parking lot. Left-hand turns onto Talley Street are not allowed.
Toward the end of last semester, we noticed an increase in families not following this procedure. These traffic patterns are in place to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and families. We kindly ask for your cooperation in supporting our crossing guards by following these procedures consistently.
Thank you for your understanding and support—we truly appreciate it.
Family Survey
Talley Street will take the new Georgia School Climate Survey this year. Each parent or guardian is invited to take the family version to answer questions about the current school(s) your child or children attend. If two or more children attend the same school, please only complete one survey for that school.
The survey measures your thoughts on how the school engages with families. Answers are not linked to names in any way. When typing answers, please do not give names or information that you don’t want to share with this school. Data will be shared with school leaders to help improve the school and will be published on the GaDOE website.
Please help by sharing your honest opinion on this 22-question survey. To take the survey, please click this link.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact me at bheaton@csdecatur.net.
Sincerely,
Billy
Lost and Found
We already have many winter coats in our lost and found. Please be sure your child's coats, jackets, hoodies, and sweaters have their names on them so the items can be returned to your child before the articles of clothing are donated each month.
Pick Up Patrol
The start of the new year is a great time to check the dismissal for your child. Please update Pick Up Patrol for all clubs, meetings and activities after school!

Music Announcement: Third Grade
Dear grown-ups of third-grade students,
I am very excited to begin playing recorders with your children this week! The benefits of learning to play the recorder are amazing, and I’ve included them below. This recorder now belongs to your child. It will be used in all grade levels in the Talley Music Program. It is your child’s responsibility to keep up with it and have it for class. While your child has the option of leaving their recorder in the music room, they are encouraged to take it home for practice. If your child loses or breaks the recorder, it will be your responsibility to replace it. Again, recorder playing is a part of the music curriculum for each grade.
Tanya Jessup, Talley Music Teacher (tjessup@csdecatur.net)
Benefits of learning to play the recorder:
Musical and cognitive development
Teaches fundamental music reading: Students learn to read music, understand rhythms, and recognize musical symbols.
Enhances listening skills: Playing the recorder improves aural skills and the ability to play with an accompaniment.
Boosts brain development: The complex task of coordinating breath, fingers, and tongue simultaneously helps engage multiple parts of the brain.
Improves memory: Learning and memorizing songs strengthens memory skills.
Physical and coordination development
Develops fine motor skills: Covering the holes requires precise finger movements and dexterity.
Improves coordination: Students learn to coordinate their fingers, tongue, and breath to produce notes.
Builds breath control: Learning to play teaches proper breath support, a foundational skill for many other wind instruments.
Promotes hand-eye coordination: It strengthens the connection between what is seen on the page and what is played with the hands.
Character and social development
Builds self-confidence: Mastering a new skill and performing for others boosts self-esteem.
Encourages discipline and focus: Consistent practice is required, which helps develop discipline.
Fosters teamwork: Playing in ensembles teaches students how to cooperate, listen to others, and work toward a common goal.
Instills perseverance: Children learn to work through challenges to master a song.
Art Contest (Deadline: January 30)
Call for artists! Submit your artist creation of our Talley Tiger! Winners will be chosen from each school to have their designs on a special CSD t-shirt to show our CSD pride. Entries can be submitted by January 30th to the Art Room.
- Did your student(s) receive a new jacket, winter apparel, water bottle, or other school gear over the break? Please label these items with your student’s name before they bring them to school, so they can be returned if they are lost and found!

If you need financial assistance, a discount code is available; contact Ms. Weaver (kiweaver@csdecatur.net), Talley school counselor. For other questions, contact yearbook@talleypto.org.
