Introducing Mrs. Burns’s second graders and their future selves! We have future nurses, veterinarians, a speed runner, teachers, a truck driver, military, a paleontologist, and a babysitter to name a few!
Miss Weil's class has been practicing the Cube method to solve word problems.
C – Circle the numbers and units in the problem so you know what data you have.
U – Underline the question to focus on what you actually need to find.
B – Box the key words (math action words like total, each, or difference) that give clues about the operation.
E – Evaluate and eliminate extra or unnecessary information that does not help answer the question.
3rd Grade
Mrs. Fenton's class dove deeper into different reading genres and recorded their reactions on a graphic organizer.
Students in Mrs. Davis’s third grade have been working on learning how to collaborate with classmates. One way is by working with a partner to complete a puzzle! Students have been enjoying this task and learning so much by working together!
4th Grade
Students in Mr. Weible's 4th grade class were working on writing numbers in expanded and word form with groups.
Officer Beers came to 4th grade and talked about address safety. Thank you, Officer Beers!
5th Grade
Students in Miss Howes’s fifth grade class learned about the importance of our community first responders during the week of the 25th anniversary of the remembrance of September 11th. Students were tasked with writing a letter of appreciation to our local law enforcement officers and fire departments at the City of Burns, City of Hines, Harney County Sheriff's Office, and the Oregon State Police. This group of students wrote to our State Troopers and received letters back from them!
Arieyuh, Aubrie, and Shiloh in Mrs. Marshall's 5th grade class, worked on their quality work samples explaining the different ways corn is used, citing evidence from the text, and explaining their reasons.
Recycling Club
Ms. Hildebrand started a recycling club and these awesome volunteer students help collect recyclables each day!
SEL (Social Emotional Learning)
In SEL with Ms. Henshaw, Mrs. Davis's third-grade students practiced kindness, communication, collaboration, and empathy by acting out kind actions and working together to identify them. This engaging SEL activity builds the interpersonal and collaborative skills students need to create a positive learning community.
PE
4th graders participated in Cross the River: a Teamwork/cooperative game with Ms. Tibbetts during PE.
Reading Intervention
Tucker and Jordan collaborated to sort words, discuss their thinking, and use problem-solving skills to build complete sentences in a small reading group.
These 4th graders in Mrs. Knox's group were working hard to highlight the main idea and important details in order to write a story summary.

AVID Elective
Miss Hughes's 6th grade AVID class has great collaboration on creating the longest paper chain using only the materials given to them!
Mr. Moss's 8th grade AVID Elective class have begun the tutorial process!
Social Studies
Mrs. Moss's 6th grade Social Studies students participated in a socratic seminar on the topic: Are flat maps were fair and accurate? Students were given a spherical shape (a mandarine), peeled the fruit, then asked if the spherical shape became disfigured when flattened. Students were divided into the different teams, gathered evidence, then debated.
Bringing History to Life: Miss Doty's 8th Grade Social Studies Authors in Action!
In a creative twist on traditional research, 8th grade social studies students became authors of their very own children's books! After diving into the rich histories and cultures of various North American peoples, student groups collaborated to take detailed notes and gather key facts. Then came the fun part — transforming their research into imaginative historical fiction stories for younger readers. Blending facts with storytelling, these books bring the past to life in a way that’s both educational and entertaining!
Science
In 6th grade Science, Mrs. Cate's students collaborated to build Gravity Cars that can travel as far as possible, using the Engineering Design Process.
Photo of the Month!
Mrs. Sorenson's 8th graders completed an engineering design challenge to answer the question "How can I design a profitable phone case that protects a phone when dropped?". As students completed the challenge, many conversations came up about how their cases in real life had (or had not) protected their phones and the purposes of various materials (screen protection, shock absorption, aesthetics). The winning group had a simple, inexpensive design that protected a model phone from drops, selfie accidents, and "rage quits".
Home Ec
The new sixth graders loved their first attempt at cooking with Mrs. Bull and building lifelong skills!
PE
Miss Nonnenmacher's students enjoyed playing Holey Tarp in PE; an AVID Relational Capacity game.
Graphic Design and Printmaking
Student work from Mr. Tiernan's Graphic Design and Printmaking Classes at HMS.
Burns High School
👏 BHS is recognized as an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction with Highly Certified AVID Electives! 🎉
Mission: Empowering students to learn, grow, and lead.
Vision: To foster a community of learners where curiosity, critical thinking, and academic excellence equip students for success through an AVID framework.
AVID Elective
In Mrs. Bauer’s 11th grade AVID class, students participated in a partner activity focused on effective communication and active listening. One student described an image while their partner attempted to draw it without seeing the original. Students had to use clear, detailed instructions, ask clarifying questions, and listen carefully to accurately recreate the image. This activity helped students strengthen their communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills while demonstrating the importance of giving and receiving clear information.
Leadership
It’s all about Dolly for the Juniors! Mr. Ellibee's Junior Leadership students are finally done with their Hilander Dolly for HOCO week!! 🥳
English Language Arts
Mrs. Banks's English 11 completed a unit on Native American origin stories. Some origin stories explained how people came from the Sky World, others discussed how people came from the Malheur Cave (Paiute creation). The pictures shown derive from the Kiowa creation story where the people came into the world through a hollow log. Students were to pick a specific quote from the short story, "The Way to Rainy Mountain" and focus on the imagery that that particular quote evoked.
In Miss Toney's AP ENG 12, students participated in the Introduction to Rhetorical Analysis- Cereal Box Rhetorical Analysis.
Social Studies
Seniors in Mr. Young's U.S. Government were acting as Congress under the Articles of Confederation. Students had to endure the struggle of the limitations of our nation's first attempt at a Constitution.
Art
Photo of the Month!
Ms. Kokesh's Art 1 students practiced pencil value scales and completed three flower drawings with decreasing levels of support: a value map, contour lines, and finally an independent full-value drawing. They then practiced the grid method and will apply these skills to create a graphite portrait of a celebrity of their choice.
AVID Strategies: Students used inquiry to analyze reference images and value changes, collaboration through peer feedback and discussion, and organization by following a step-by-step process using the grid method.
Pictured: Brooklynn Planinz with her flower drawing with contour line support.
Science
Students in Ms. Smith's Biology class participated in a collaborative STEM design challenge in which they were given a written prompt outlining the project’s requirements, constraints, and expectations. Working in groups of three, students were challenged to design, budget, build, and test a water tower capable of holding the equivalent of 10,000 gallons of “water,” represented by 100 pennies.
Students had to work within specific constraints, including time, budget, available materials, and tower height. Each tower was required to be at least 50 cm tall and remain within the established budget. Students were responsible for developing a design, calculating and managing costs, selecting appropriate materials, constructing their tower, and testing its ability to meet the challenge requirements.
Following testing, each student completed an individual written reflection in which they analyzed the success of their tower, identified strengths and areas for improvement, and reflected on the design and building process. Students also evaluated their contributions to the group and their effectiveness as a team member.
This activity intentionally incorporated all five components of AVID WICOR:
Writing: Students documented their design process and completed an individual written reflection.
Inquiry: Students analyzed the problem, considered possible designs, tested their ideas, and determined how to improve their structures.
Collaboration: Students worked in groups of three to make decisions, solve problems, manage resources, and construct their tower.
Organization: Students managed time, materials, budget, measurements, and the steps necessary to complete the project.
Reading: Students read and interpreted the written project prompt, requirements, constraints, and expectations in order to develop a successful design.
The project provided students with an authentic opportunity to apply scientific and engineering concepts while practicing the academic and collaborative skills emphasized through AVID.
Math
Mrs. McKrola’s Senior Health class created posters highlighting the three areas of health: social, emotional, and physical. Students included examples of each type of health and shared ways they personally work to stay healthy in each area.
