Families,

Welcome to a new school year at Dayton Elementary! We're excited to partner with you in your child's educational journey. At Dayton, our goal is to create a nurturing environment where every student can grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Our dedicated team and robust resources are here to help your child succeed. Please take a moment to learn about some of those resources below.

  • Character Strong: For years, our Dayton team has identified character traits that support our students’ social and emotional growth. Character Strong helps us engage in this work even more purposefully. Each month, our whole school will learn about a character trait. This month our focus is respect. Respect is “seeing value in all people and things and treating them with care.” Family resources, including conversation starters, family pursuits and more can be found here:

  • Every Meal: We are excited to partner with the nonprofit organization, Every Meal, to offer a free weekend food program to all our students. The mission of Every Meal is to fight child hunger through community and school partnerships. This program strives to make a difference in children’s lives by focusing on food gaps like weekends, school breaks and summer, when students are not receiving meals in school. If you are interested in learning more, click here. If you’d like to register for this program, please use this Electronic enrollment form.

  • School Counselor, Michele Lange and School Social Worker, Sydney Fleischman: Ms. Lange and Ms. Fleischman can provide individual, small group and classroom guidance to help students attain optimum level of personal, social, and academic success. School Counselors and Social Workers also serve as a resource for families seeking additional support or resources in the school community. Michele Lange can be reached by email: michele.lange@ahschools.us or by phone 763-506-2266. Sydney Fleischman can be reached by email: Sydney.Fleischman@ahschools.us

  • Parent Educator, Tawnya Heinsohn , is joining our Dayton Elementary team as a Pre-K to Grade 3 parenting educator. Elizabeth is able to provide free parenting support, home visits/family meetings, resources, and other support for families. More info can be found here: https://www.ahschools.us/prektograde3 or by contacting Tawnya by email: tawnya.heinsohn@ahschools.us

  • Community Resource: CROSS Services: A nearby nonprofit social services organization that assists individuals and families in need. More information can be found here.

  • Community Resource: Northwest Family Resource Collaborative: The Family Advocate Services include resources and referrals for food/clothing/household needs, as well as other family support services. This service is free for families. For more information call 763-585-7378, or click here for more information.

Please reach out to me any time if you want to ask questions, share ideas or just talk so we can get to know each other even better.

We hope to see you at the Parent Teacher Organization meeting on Monday, Sept. 8th at 6pm in the library.

Happy 2025-2026 school year!

Art

Welcome back! 1st through 5th graders will be collaborating on a floral mural to decorate the hallways of Dayton. Look out for these fabulous flowers during conferences in October. Please send a sketchbook to school with your student if you haven’t already done so (Kindergarten does not need these). Thank you!

Explorations

📚 Welcome Back!

Explorations is back for another exciting year, now with our own classroom space to be filled with energy, curiosity, and life. Each grade will be diving into hands-on learning, big questions, and exciting challenges. I can’t wait to see our students’ grow and shine in their own way.

🌱 Kindergarten – My Big Nature Adventure
Kindergarteners are kicking off the year with My Big Nature Adventure! We’ll start exploring the world of science by looking closely at plants and discovering what they need to survive. Through hands-on activities and observations, students will grow their curiosity about the natural world around them.

🍃 First Grade – Museum of Leafology
First graders are entering the Museum of Leafology, where every leaf has a story to tell! We’ll investigate plants and their unique parts—including seeds—and learn how each part plays an important role in helping plants live and grow. Students will get to become “leafologists” as they compare, collect, and explore.

🔧 Second Grade – Master of Materials
Second graders are becoming engineers in Master of Materials! We’ll explore the properties of different materials, testing what makes them bend, stretch, soak up water, or stay strong. Students will apply what they learn to solve challenges and discover how material choices shape the things we use every day.

🐾 Third Grade – The Pet Problem
Third graders are starting The Pet Problem, where science meets design! Working in science teams, students will investigate materials and forces as they design a pet umbrella. This unit introduces teamwork, engineering, and problem-solving—all with a playful twist.

🏛️ Fourth Grade – U.S. Government
Fourth graders are analyzing how our U.S. government works. We’ll look closely at the three branches of government, the roles of leadership, and why checks and balances are important. Students will explore how these systems shape decisions in our country and connect them to the idea of good leadership in their own lives.

🏺 Fifth Grade – Ancient Civilizations
Fifth graders are traveling back in time to explore Ancient Civilizations! From daily life to inventions, we’ll learn about the unique ways different groups lived and how they influenced the world we live in today. Students will compare cultures, share discoveries, and uncover how the past continues to shape our present.

Library

Welcome back, Dayton readers! This month, we are reviewing library expectations and procedures. All students in grades 1-5 will get to check out books starting their first week of library! We will also review book care so that we know how to keep our library books safe at home and school. Ask your child one way they can keep their books safe at home when they borrow them.

Kindergarteners will learn about what a library is, how it works, and how to care for library books at home and school. In just a few short weeks, they will also get to bring home their first library to enjoy with their family!

Music

Welcome back to music! This September we will be singing, dancing, and playing instruments as we review the things we learned last year. 5th grade families should start trying to track down your student’s recorders. We’ll begin playing them later this fall.
