Wind Storm Preparation
November 19, 2024
Important Information
An unusually strong storm system is expected to bring southeast winds of 15-30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph from this afternoon until early Wednesday morning. There is a possibility of power outages that could impact our schools. Sedro-Woolley schools plan to remain open tomorrow if conditions allow. In the event of widespread power outages, we will adjust as needed.
If conditions require a two-hour late start on Wednesday, here’s what you would need to know (remember, school will begin at regularly scheduled times unless you're notified - so no news in the morning means school will start at the regular one-hour late start time):
In the event of a two-hour late start (remember, you would receive a notification Wednesday morning if this decision is made):
No Professional Learning Wednesday Activities or staff meetings.
Bus schedules: All morning bus pick-ups would run two hours later than normal. There might be potential delays due to downed trees or power lines. Use the My Ride K-12 app for updates on your child’s bus route. Directions to access your student’s information are available below.
Cancellations in the event of a two-hour delay:
- Morning Preschool Programs: This includes Good Beginnings, Samish Cooperative, Cub Club, and Y @ Good Beginnings Preschool.
- Before-School Programs: No before-school activities, including Cascade Middle School’s music programs.
- Field Trips: All field trips—both within and outside the district—will be canceled.
- Out-of-District Transportation: Morning transportation for programs like Northwest Career & Technical Academy, special education, and McKinney-Vento students will not run.
Breakfast Service: Breakfast will only be available at Sedro-Woolley High School, State Street High School, and Cascade Middle School.
Why Would the District Consider a Late Start?
Starting two hours later would allow time for daylight to improve visibility for buses navigating dark, potentially blocked roadways. Downed trees or branches could be difficult to spot in early-morning conditions, especially for routes beginning as early as 6 a.m.
How We Would Notify Families:
If a two-hour late start is necessary, we will send updates via:
- Text, email, and call (Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date in Skyward)
- The district website and social media channels
- Local news stations (FlashAlert)
Be Prepared:
Charge your devices this afternoon, and ensure your child is dressed warmly for the morning. Check for updates before leaving home.
Prepare to be without electricity. Update your emergency kit with food, water, flashlight, matches and blankets. Also make sure cell phones are charged before the storm. Report outages by calling PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or at www.pse.com/outage.
Thank you for your flexibility and understanding!
Wednesday Late Start Times
Understanding Late Starts on a Wednesday
If we announce a two-hour late start on a regular late-start Wednesday, it can be a bit confusing! The two-hour delay is based on the regular start time, not the late-start schedule. Here's what that looks like:
- Elementary Schools: 11:25 a.m.
- Cascade Middle School: 9:40 a.m.
- Sedro-Woolley High School: 9:55 a.m.
- State Street High School: 10:00 a.m.
