Academics
Literacy
This week, we completed our Unit 1 Benchmark assessment and wrapped up our learning about plants and animals in their habitats. Students read nonfiction texts about animals and practiced using TIDE to organize their ideas and write about what they learned. We are continuing to build our nonfiction reading and writing skills!
Since it was a short week, we did not have a specific phonics focus this week. We’ll jump back into our phonics learning next week and we will focus on long o (oa, ow, o_e, and _oe).
Writing
This week, students focused on taking their writing from a draft to a finished final copy. They carefully edited their work for capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and complete sentences before writing their final drafts. Students worked hard to make their writing clear and easy for their readers to understand.
Next week, we will begin Unit 2 and dive into opinion writing! Students will learn how to clearly state their opinion, give reasons to support their thinking, and add details to explain their ideas.
Math
This week, we worked on two-step word problems. Students practiced solving problems that require two different steps and learned how to decide which operations and strategies will help them find the answer. They also practiced showing their thinking and explaining how they solved each problem.
Next week, we will use what we have learned throughout Unit 1 to review and prepare for our assessment. After that, we will officially wrap up our first math unit!
We will also be looking at students’ Unit 2 pretest results to help us plan instruction and make sure students are working on skills that best meet their learning needs. Because of this, your child’s math group may change for Unit 2.
