Weekly Welcome Words
Happy Sunday Cavalier Families!
We hope that you all have had an amazing weekend. Happy Mother's Day to all of the amazing moms in our Cavalier community! We hope that you have enjoyed a day filled with gratitude and love!
We are getting close to the end of the school year and there is a lot going on! This week, we have band, choir, and orchestra shows. We will also close out our athletics programs for the year with Golf on Tuesday and Tennis on Saturday. The next few weeks will be filled with celebrations and special events. There will also still be learning taking place in the classroom. Students will need our encouragement to stay focused. 🙂
Thursday, May 16th, we will have our first ever "Anything But a Backpack Day" for our 8th grade students. This is a fun way to celebrate some of their last days in middle school. On Thursday, students can carry their things in something other than a backpack. The main rule of this day is to avoid backpacks.
- Be creative: Students can use creative ways to carry their things around school, such as picnic baskets, cooking pots, birdcages, or magic hats.
- Make safe choices: Students need to make safe choices, such as using a container that can be carried, pushed, or pulled through a door. There will not be anywhere for them to store the item if they don't want to carry it.
- Follow dress code: Items must be school appropriate, including following dress code and guidelines in the student handbook.
- Keep school regulations in mind: Avoid anything that will get you in trouble.
This week is also the final week for students to attend the Learning Lab and/or Boys and Girls Club after school. Friday, May 17th will be the last day that these after school programs is open this year.
With so many things happening, it is very important that we remind students that safety is our priority. All students will continue to be held accountable for following the Killeen ISD Student Code of Conduct, and consequences will be upheld for any behaviors not in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. These consequences can include in-school or out-of-school suspension and even placement at Gateway Alternative School. We will continue to incorporate safety drills the last two weeks of school, which includes random metal detector checks/searches. I ask that you please speak with your student and remind them that we take everyone’s safety very seriously and to report any unsafe things to an adult immediately should they hear about or see something that is not safe.
Additionally, starting this Friday, May 17th through next Thursday, May 23rd, students will not be permitted to carry backpacks onto campus. Students who bring their cell phone to school will need to turn it off and keep it in their pocket. The phone should never be visible during the school day. We will still be enforcing the no cell phone policy. Any student that comes to campus with a backpack will be required to check the bag into a designated location and they will not have access to it during the day.
As always, we appreciate your support in helping us keep CPMS a safe environment, and we look forward to helping your students finish the school year strong.
A few other reminders for our families:
- If you visit our campus, you need to check in at the front office immediately upon arrival.
- While on campus, you should refrain from interacting with any child other than your own. If you are not listed on their demographic information, you do not have their parent or guardian's permission to communicate with them at our school.
- During events (Athletics, Fine Arts, Community Outreach, etc.), you are here to encourage and support your own student. It is inappropriate to speak negatively to or about other people (including the competition).
We are working to help our students understand policies, procedures, and the power of words. They will look to you as one of their role models and we appreciate your help with this.
We are looking forward to a Cav-tastic week with your students!
Thank you,
Christina Harris
Student and Staff Safety are our #1 priority!
It is very important that we keep safety our #1 priority. In order to do this, we need students to do a few things:
- Students need to wear their IDs every day. The ID helps every adult know that the student belongs in the building.
- Each day, every period, students need to go from point A to point B. There should be no horseplay or lingering in the hallways.
- Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom unless they are called by an office or have a restroom emergency. Students need to remain in class, participating in the learning.
- The restrooms are for taking care of bodily functions. They are not for hanging out with friends or being on the phone. Students are not to loiter in the restrooms during the day. Backpacks are still not allowed in the restroom.
- Students must continue to follow lunch procedures. They should use their hand signals to let the adults know what they need while in the cafeteria. They also are not to get up without permission from an adult. We have almost 350 students in each lunch. Our systems are in place to help to get them all fed and keep them safe during the 35 minutes that they are in the cafeteria.
- Students are not to linger on campus after school. Students who walk or are car-riders are released at 3:30PM and should head home immediately.
We appreciate your support in these matters!
