Sky Ranch Participation Agreement & How to Pay in Skyward

Exciting news!

On Friday, your child brought home the Sky Ranch packet for you to complete. Please be sure that all pages are filled out and signed.

If your child does not require medication, please mark through that page before returning the packet.

If you know your child is going we would greatly appreciate having the packets returned as soon as possible, as this will help us begin more detailed planning for the trip.

Payments will be made through Skyward. Please make sure you do not pay for the chaperone even if you want to attend. I will let parents know who will be our chaperones in November. There are no refunds, so I don't want you to pay thinking that you can go, and something happens on our end. Below are the instructional links on how to pay.

  • REQUIRED FEES

  • OPTIONAL FEE

This will be an amazing time for the students. They will be learning many science concepts hands-on, will be able to work as a team with their group, have fun with friends in a new setting, and get to know others that they may not have had the opportunity to in the regular classroom environment. We would love all to attend!!

Here is the link from Sky Ranch for parents to fill out if your child is going to Sky Ranch. Please make sure you fill out the dietary needs for your child.

Remember, the packet, this Sky Ranch link, and payments in Skyward are due by 11/17.

Chaperones are responsible for staying with their assigned group at all times, sleeping in the same cabin, and ensuring students are safe and on time for all scheduled activities, among other duties. Chaperones must drive or carpool to Sky Ranch in Van, Texas, on the morning of departure.

Please be sure to complete the Prosper ISD Background Check as soon as possible in order to be considered. This process can take up to two weeks.

The cost for chaperones will be $238.00

We will finalize chaperone selections and notify families during the week of November 2nd, so you can plan accordingly.

This trip is an incredible opportunity to share an unforgettable experience with your child!

Unit 2 Update: Early Exploration & Colonization We are continuing our deep dive into early American history this week! Here is a look at what your learners will be working on in class: Investigating Jamestown: Students are exploring historical documents to understand the challenges the early Jamestown settlers faced while trying to build their community. Writing Their First DBQ Essay: Using primary sources and historical evidence, students will begin drafting their Document-Based Question (DBQ) essay to answer our main guiding question: "Why did so many colonists die?" This hands-on research project is a wonderful way for students to practice thinking, analyzing, and writing like real historians!

What we are learning this week...

Reading & English Language Arts: Students are stepping into the wonderful world of poetry and figurative language! We will explore a variety of poems, discover the figurative language and poetic devices authors use, and then use the poems we read as inspiration to create poems of our own.

Math: Next week, we will wrap up dividing whole numbers and decimals and introduce order of operations! Students will use multiplication to check their division answers and learn how to evaluate expressions in the correct order.

Try this at home: Ask your child to solve 6 + 3 x 4 and (6 + 3) x 4. How do the parentheses change the steps and the answer?

Science: Students will be introduced to force and motion by identifying how pushes and pulls can change an object's motion and describing how forces affect the movement of objects.

Social Studies: Students will identify the main causes of the American Revolution and explain why the American colonists wanted independence from Great Britain.

ScienceπŸ”¬ ScienceπŸ”¬

Here are some different, more creative options that don't feel like traditional homework for Science this Unit:

πŸ•΅οΈ 1. Force & Motion Scavenger Hunt

Students find 5 examples of force and motion at home and record:

  • What is moving?
  • Is the force a push or pull?
  • What happened to the object's motion?

Example: Door β†’ Push β†’ Door moved open.

πŸŽ₯ 2. 30-Second Force & Motion Video

Students can make a quick video showing one example of force changing motion. They must explain:

β€œThe force being used is ____. It causes the object to ____.”

🧠 3. Force & Motion Would You Rather

Have students answer:

  • Would you rather push a heavy box across carpet or tile? Why?
  • Would you rather ride a bike uphill or downhill? Why?
  • Would you rather kick a soccer ball hard or softly? What would happen?
  • Would you rather slide a toy across ice or carpet? Why?

The goal is for them to explain their reasoning using force, motion, and friction.

πŸ€ 4. Sports Connection

Students choose a sport and identify 5 examples of force and motion.

For example:

  • Basketball β†’ pushing the ball toward the basket
  • Soccer β†’ kicking the ball
  • Baseball β†’ hitting the ball with a bat
  • Tennis β†’ racket applying force to the ball

Then answer:

How does changing the amount or direction of force change the motion of the object?

🎯 5. Predict Before You Try

Give students a simple prediction challenge:

Which will travel farther?

  • A gently rolled ball or a strongly rolled ball?
  • A toy car on carpet or tile?
  • A car starting from a low ramp or high ramp?

Have them write:
My prediction β†’ What I observed β†’ Why I think it happened

✏️ 6. Draw the Force

Students draw 3 different situations and use arrows to show the direction of the force.

For each picture, they label:
Object + Force + Direction of Motion

This is a great way to get them thinking about force as more than just β€œpushing something.”

Classroom EconomyπŸ’ΈπŸ›’

Our classroom economy program is thriving, and the students are enthusiastic about tracking their earnings. We encourage you to ask your child to share their bank account details with you.

To ensure the continued success of this initiative, we kindly request your support. We will be hosting a grade-level store once every nine weeks, and the first one is approaching quickly. We would greatly appreciate any contributions you can make to our Amazon Wish List.

Thank you for your generosity and support!
