A new school year brings excitement, and our athletic teams at Temple have had some exciting results through the first few weeks of competition. A special congratulations to women’s rower Gemma Wollenschlaeger, who won a silver medal at the Paralympics this past weekend in France. Great job, Gemma!

Temple rising senior Gemma Wollenschlaeger and Team USA earned a silver medal in the Mixed 4+ at the 2024 Paralympic Games in France on Sunday. Wollenschlaeger, who was recently named OwlSports.com Athlete of the Week, and the United States gave heavy favorites Great Britain – who set a world record in its heat and won the European championships by 13 seconds – a run, but ultimately settled for a hard-fought second place.

Convocation at Temple University is an annual tradition each fall that celebrates the arrival of new undergraduate first-year and transfer students. It marks the beginning of your academic journey. University leaders and several student leaders will welcome the incoming class.

Graduate student Taylor Davenport put together an impressive three-match stretch to earn MVP honors and help Temple volleyball win its season-opening Cherry & White Invitational. Davenport led all hitters with 46 kills and hit .311 as she also picked up weekly honorable mention honors from the American Athletic Conference. Alyssa Finister and Sydney Jones joined Davenport on the All-Tournament Team.

Another Temple volleyball student-athlete garnered the spotlight after a prime showing this past weekend. Sophomore setter Lexi Yoza was selected as the AAC Setter of the Week for the first time in her career. Yoza finished with 6.1 assists per set over four matches, and had three straight 20-assist performances at the Cherry & White Invitational. Taylor Davenport, after winning MVP at the Cherry & White Invite, earned a spot on the AAC’s weekly honorable mention list.

Courtney Taylor, a 2021 Temple graduate, was one of 23 players named to the inaugural U.S. Women's Box National Team. The squad will represent the United States at the World Championships to he held September 20-29 in Utica, N.Y. A 2021 Third Team All-American, Taylor was a two-time All-AAC honoree, earning First Team accolades as a senior and Second Team in 2019. She was the American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2021 when she helped lead the Owls to a 13-6 record and the NCAA Tournament, earning a 14-13 win against UMass in the First Round.

Temple’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted the annual Welcome Back Bash on campus. Members of all 19 varsity sport programs enjoyed field games, refreshments, and getting back together to kick off another successful academic year.

Temple’s field hockey team began the 2024 season with two decisive victories this past weekend. The Owls scored a 7-0 shutout victory over Queens University and followed that up with a 6-0 blanking of Lock Haven two days later. Nine different players have scored goals through two games, and the goalkeeper duo of Alex Lepore and Isabella Ospitale have not allowed a goal through 120 minutes of action. Temple will face a stiff challenge this week at No. 3 Virginia on Friday.

Senior David Troy took home first place and helped the men’s cross country team to a team title at the 2nd Annual Temple Owl Cross Country Invitational. Troy crossed in 19:13, over 12 seconds in front of second place CJ Sullivan from Villanova. The Owls, who had a team score of 36, bested Villanova and La Salle by 11 points. Freshman Amelia Sabatino led the women with a top-15 showing.

Temple football opens its 2024 home schedule on Saturday, September 14 as it hosts Coastal Carolina at Lincoln Financial Field. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. Get your tickets today and come cheer on the Owls!
