Winter Show Winter Show

Our Winter Show was a great success. Our students dressed their best and warmed our hearts with their beautiful singing and instrumental skills. It was a perfect kick-off to our winter break. Thank you to all of the families who came out to support our students!

The Giving Tree The Giving Tree

Our 5th Grade Student Council Giving Tree Initiative has concluded! We set out with a goal to collect a total of 200 toys, books, and gift cards for families within our community to be delivered by our police department. Each day, our students would walk by the tree wanting to understand the purpose of the collection. After a presentation to the entire school and several announcements from our Student Council Members, our students set out on a mission to give back to our community. They would eagerly pass and check the progress meter in the hallway to see if the total number of items was closer to our goal. Our students were filled with joy stacking toys within the boxes and watching them pile up. The empathy from our students was just truly amazing and heart-warming. The outpouring from our PTO and local businesses made our initiative even more exciting! We even partnered with AMAZON (thanks to our PTO member, Ms. Perez), and a truck full of toys showed up!

So did we meet our goal as a school and collect 200 gifts? No...WE COLLECTED 365 GIFTS!!!! We surpassed our goal and we could not be more excited! A special thank you to our students and their families for contributing to this important endeavor.

Also, a great big thank you to everyone else within our community that made this HUGE collection possible: Steen School PTO, NLM Marketing, Ice House Hackensack NJ, Bounce Party Mania, Karla Jimenez Cakes and More, @Cafeteria111, and Ms. Perez and Amazon.com! Also, a special thank you to our Bogota Police Department for collaborating with us on this initiative! They have picked up the toys and will be delivering them to families within our community on Christmas Eve!

December Staff Hawk of the Month - December Staff Hawk of the Month -

Steen School would like to congratulate the December Staff Member of the Month: Mrs. Julie Vinci! Mrs. Vinci has been teaching in Bogota for the past 7 years. She began as a preschool teacher in Bixby and then moved to Steen School to teach first grade. This year, she moved up to second grade with many of her students. She absolutely loves it! Mrs. Vinci is an excellent team player. She enjoys collaborating and co-teaching with other staff members in the building. Her class is built upon the saying 'our class is a family.' Each day, she makes her students feel valued and appreciated. As a result, she has great rapport with her second graders and they are eager to come to school each and every day. Mrs. Vinci always brings fun and creative ideas to the classroom and is always up for new challenges. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Her other hobbies include cooking and traveling. A fun fact about Mrs. Vinci: she loves to collect magnets from all of the places that she has traveled to! Congratulations Mrs. Vinci! Well deserved!

Wellness Corner Wellness Corner

As an educator for 20+ years, I have always stated my number one job is to help produce healthy, happy, thriving adults in our ever-complicated world. I truly believe that no child can learn if their mental health is not in a good place. No child can focus on math if they struggle with themselves, with friends, or with family. Mental health is the true foundation of who they are, and without it, everything else crumbles.

Recognizing this, our school offers a variety of programs and resources to support the mental well-being of our students. We are fortunate to have Peer Leaders from the high school who connect with our kids, as well as guidance counselors, and social workers who are always available to provide assistance. Our amazing mentoring program pairs at-risk students with staff members in our building, creating a reliable in-school support system. Bogota CARES, funded by the NJ Department of Education, offers dedicated mental health counseling, while graduate students from FDU’s School Psychology program bring their expertise directly into our schools to help students build strength in their minds, bodies, and relationships. Additionally, CarePlus and our wellness center provide comprehensive services, including counseling, care coordination, school clearance assessments, and access to integrated care and social support services. Through these initiatives, students can benefit from individual counseling, skill-building groups in areas like mindfulness and stress management, and educational workshops for faculty and parents. Direct in-class support is also available to help students and teachers address challenges as they arise. These resources are here to ensure every student has the tools they need to thrive. If you or someone you know could benefit from these programs, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our school counselor. Together, we can provide the help and support that every child deserves.
