What's Happening at GRS?

Happy October!

Now that have completed the first month of the school year, the time has come for our first edition of the Gator Regional Newsletter known as "Gator Alley." The school year is in full swing with academics, sports, and a palpable sense of momentum that is driving our entire community forward.

The start of the year has been incredibly productive. Students are working hard in their classes, demonstrating high levels of engagement as they establish routines and tackle new, challenging material. The energy and focus in the classrooms are clear indicators of the successful academic journey ahead.

To ensure our efforts are cohesive and effective, we held grade-level meetings which were specifically centered on our instructional focus for the year. Our instructional focus remains on the tasks students are doing and shifting more of the cognitive load so students are doing more of the thinking. This collaborative planning guarantees that our teaching strategies are aligned across the board, maximizing student success and educational outcomes. If you did not get a chance, take a look at this letter to families I sent out a few weeks ago with more information!

A highlight of this week was the specialized training some of our 7th and 8th graders received from Northeastern University. The focus of this program was vital: making GRS an even more welcoming and inclusive school. We are exceptionally proud of these students for taking on the role of leaders and positive agents of change, shaping a school environment where every student feels valued and supported. This training was similar to what some of our 9th, 10th, and 11th graders received last year.

Beyond the classroom, sports are in full swing, with our fall teams competing with dedication and great spirit. The commitment shown by our student-athletes and the enthusiastic support from our community have made for an exciting start to the athletic season. Stop by Booster's Field for a home game to watch our athletes in action!

We encourage all families to read on to learn more about the excellent work happening throughout the school. This first month has laid a strong foundation, and we look forward to sharing a year of growth, achievement, and continued collaboration. As as reminder, please make sure that students are charging their chromebooks at home or bringing their chargers to school. Most of our classes use computers regularly, so students need to be able to use their technology.

If you have questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me, at wsullivan@grsd.org or 413-685-1109, or Assistant Principal Zeh at vzeh@grsd.org

Best,

Dr. Sullivan, Principal

"The Den" "The Den"

"The Den" was created last year for students in grades 9-12 as a place to do work independently, eat lunch, or collaborate with peers. This summer, we were able to add some additional furniture and signage to expand it to make it more accessible to students.

Open House (Thursday, October 9) Open House (Thursday, October 9)

Thursday, October 8, is our annual Open House at GRS. In addition to welcoming families of students in grades 6-12, we are pleased to welcome in community partners and organizations to share their work with the community. For families, there will be some fundraisers for classes and organizations that support our school. In addition, we will have scavenger hunts and other activities set up for students to learn about our school. The time of the Open House is 6:00-7:30. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Spanish Class Wall Designs Spanish Class Wall Designs

To start our year together, students in all Spanish classes randomly selected a common object, food, or animal, along with an emotion (e.g., a happy banana), to paint on the walls outside the Spanish classrooms. This gave us a chance to spend a couple of days together getting to know each other, show off our art skills, and learn a few new words. We are so proud of our creative Spanish students!

NEST NEST

The NEST program is off to a fantastic start! For the first couple of weeks, students focused on team building within their assigned NEST on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This included everything from creating a unique NEST name and building a crest to participating in collaborative activities like a cup-stacking challenge where every student had a specific role to play in building the tallest tower. These blocks also include important iWellness surveys and grade check-ins with their Navi-Gators. Now, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the program has shifted to interest-based activities, allowing students to choose from exciting options like soccer, car maintenance, origami, Dungeons and Dragons, Jeopardy, and more! During the Culture Committee meeting last week, we met with students to talk about how NEST is going so far and what changes we can make to have it meet their expectations.
