Important Message from the Minnesota Departments of Health and Education: Guidance for Measles in Schools
Minnesota has confirmed three recent measles cases in school-age children who exposed others at school. Measles is a serious, highly contagious disease that spreads through airborne droplets. Most fully vaccinated people (two MMR doses) are protected, but unvaccinated students and staff remain at risk. With measles circulating in Minnesota, we are:
- Asking schools to assess their readiness to respond to a case of measles or potential exposures within their school.
- Encouraging schools to share information about measles and the importance of vaccination with families and staff.
- Reminding all schools of the importance of ensuring compliance with the immunization requirements in the school immunization law found in Minnesota Statutes 2024, section 121A.15 and Minnesota Rules, part 4604.
Any unvaccinated students and staff who are exposed to a case of measles must remain home, out of school and other activities, for 21 days or longer to prevent further cases of measles. Because measles spreads easily through the air, even before people may have symptoms, a single case of measles at a school can, and has, led to the entire school being exposed.
As of September 30, 2025, there have been 1,544 confirmed cases of measles, 191 hospitalizations, and three deaths reported by 42 states in 2025. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) are working together to ensure that every student in the state of Minnesota can learn in a safe and supportive environment, with continued access to learning and instruction in the event of a measles exposure. The guidance below provides schools and districts with information to help minimize exposures and disruptions to learning if a student in your school has measles.
Please review the important message from MDH and MDE that includes several steps you can take to learn more about measles, a school’s response, and the requirements for reporting a measles case in your school.
