Thoughts from Dr. Cohen
CMAS Starts!
The Night Before: Setting the Stage
Prioritize Sleep: This is the #1 factor for cognitive performance. Aim for a full 9–10 hours for elementary and middle schoolers.
The "No-Stress" Zone: Keep the evening routine calm. Avoid starting new, difficult projects or having heavy conversations.
Lay it Out: Pick out clothes and pack the backpack the night before to avoid a rushed, stressful Monday morning.
The Morning Of: Fuel and Focus
Brain Fuel: A breakfast that combines protein and complex carbs (like eggs, oatmeal, or Greek yogurt) provides steady energy.
Hydration: Send them with a water bottle. Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue and loss of focus.
On-Time Arrival: Aim to get to school 5–10 minutes earlier than usual. Arriving late or rushing into the classroom can trigger immediate "test anxiety."
During the Test: Mental Strategies
If your student is feeling nervous, remind them of these quick tips:
Breathe: If they feel stuck, tell them to take three deep "belly breaths" to reset their nervous system.
Skip and Return: CMAS is timed. If a question is too hard, they should mark it, move on, and come back to it at the end if time allows.
Read the Whole Prompt: CMAS often uses multi-step word problems. Remind them to check whether the question asks for a single answer or multiple parts (e.g., "Explain your reasoning").
After the Test: Decompression
Keep it Low-Key: Your student might be "brain-fried" after school. Avoid asking "How did you do?" immediately. Instead, try "I'm proud of how hard you worked today."
Physical Activity: Give them time to play outside or move around. Sitting for long testing blocks builds up restless energy that needs an outlet.
Perspective: Remind them that CMAS is just one data point. It doesn't define their intelligence or their worth—it’s just a way for the school to see what they’ve learned so far.
Good luck to your student—they’ve got this!
