Greetings at the Door: Creating a positive environment for students to learn
When one Liberty Ridge Elementary kindergartener saw his teacher, Mrs. Oddenino, ready to greet him by the door of his classroom one January morning, he couldn’t hold back his excitement.
“Can I say something first?” he asked, grinning.
“Yes, tell me something,” said Mrs. Oddenino.
“We’re going to Monster Jam on Sunday!” he said, and promised to take photos to show her the cool trucks.
How we start the morning can set the tone for our entire day. The same goes for learning in our classrooms.
At SBLSD we practice Positive Greetings at the Door, which builds relationships between our students and staff to create positive learning environments and make each student feel known, valued and supported - our Future Ready promise.
So, what do Positive Greetings at the Door look like? See our teachers in action below!

Sumner FFA competes at districts
Sumner High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) competed at a district competition at Yelm High School on Wednesday with other local district teams.
FFA’s Parliamentary Procedure team placed second and consisted of Trent O., Lexie J., Mia C., Cole V., Peyton A. and Lorelei B. In this contest, students had to run a meeting using Parliamentary Procedure rules such as how to make a motion and and how to debate. Parli is coached by last year's Sumner Agriculture Science teacher, Jessica Olaiya.
Trent O. took second place in Creed, and McKenna H. took seventh place. Creed is a contest only open to first-year FFA members where students have to memorize the five-paragraph FFA Creed, present it, and answer questions about what they memorized. This is the first time in many years that Sumner has had FFA members compete in the Creed competition. Creed is coached by Sumner High advisor Maria Montoya.
Congratulations to all of our students who competed!

These guest speakers included Antonio Grate, emotional strategist and professional speaker; Michael Smith, senior counselor at the Association of Washington Student Leaders’ Mt. Adams Leadership Camp; Eugene Hamilton, speaker and education consultant; and Doug Baldwin, former Seahawk who now works in the nonprofit industry.
