Staff Highlight of the Week - Miss Alyssa Fine

What is your role at Kings Road School?

I am a third-grade teacher!

What are your qualifications to serve in your role?

This is my 10th year at KRS. I subbed in the district before I was hired as a teacher full time. I have a Masters degree in Elementary Education from Quinnipiac University (go bobcats!). I also worked as a sleepaway camp director for 6 summers, which is a lot like being at school with less math and more bears.

What do you like about Kings Road School?

I love my coworkers, who are so hardworking and love the community we work in. We have so much fun together throughout the year. It also goes without saying that I love the kids, it is a special experience to spend an entire year watching kids grow. I always say- I’m never bored at work!

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. I read it aloud to my class every year, and love the lesson it teaches about the importance of lifelong learning.

What do you like to do when you are not at Kings Road School?

In my free time I enjoy reading, baking, and traveling. It is one of my goals to see all 50 states (so far I have been to 26), and I collect Starbucks mugs from every place I’ve been. I also enjoy making silly videos with my coworkers, and spending time with my friends and family!

Literacy - Author Ross Burach

This week in the library we introduced our students to our author visit Ross Burach books by having the students in grades 3, 4, and 5 reading to our younger students. Our grade 3, 4, 5 students were wonderful role models, and the students in grades K, 1, and 2 were amazing listeners! We were so proud of them!

News from the Art Room

Kindergarten: We are focusing on art projects paired with books! Students are learning about different art materials. We are currently working on a project inspired by the book Hooray For Fish. Students are drawing a fish with oil pastels, and then painting the entire page with watercolors. The students have all impressed me with their drawing skills! They are learning how to balance the amount of water needed to spread their watercolors smoothly!

First Grade: We are incorporating the element of art SHAPE into our projects. Students are creating collages using organic shapes based on the artwork of Henri Matisse.

Second Grade: Students are hard at work creating their own under-the-sea self-portraits! We are taking an imaginary trip to Australia! Students are using drawing, painting, printing, and collage techniques to create original artwork.

Third Grade: We are taking an imaginary trip to Tanzania! Students are working on a self-portrait placing themselves on Safari! The students have exceeded expectations with these projects- keep an eye out for when they come home!

Fourth Grade: Students are finishing their collages inspired by the painted houses of Burkina Faso. They used printmaking techniques to create a special paper to use in their collage.

Fifth Grade: Students have been learning about Street Art. We looked at art by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Lady Pink. Students are creating their name in graffiti style and incorporating it into a larger piece of art.

Greetings from Spanish Class! - Mrs. Dearborn

Greetings from Spanish Class!

We are having a great time learning and exploring the Spanish language. This week, we have been working on body parts, and students are actively engaging in fun activities such as Simon dice (Simon Says), assembling a paper doll and completing a worksheet to reinforce their learning.

Additionally, students have been learning about celebrations during the summer in South AmericaI. They discovered that carnivals are popular in many countries , and their favorites were the Carnival in Brazil and Inti Raymi in Peru.

Thank you for your continued support! I am excited to see my students grow in their spanish learning!
