4th Grade Newsletter

Hello fourth grade families!

This week we will be doing our baseline i-Ready assessments for reading and math. I will be sending home your student's scores at the end of this week. i-Ready is an online program for reading and mathematics that will help your student’s teacher determine your student’s opportunities for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year. The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your student’s instructional priorities. Each item a student sees is individualized based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier questions.

It is important to remember that these will just be your student's baseline scores for the year. We will make a plan based on the results and then work to make growth. The most important thing that you can do to help your student this week is to tell them to try their best and that you will support them no matter their score. Please try to ensure that students are getting a good night's rest each night so that they are coming in refreshed!

Esta semana realizaremos las evaluaciones i-Ready de referencia para lectura y matemáticas. Enviaré a casa los resultados de su estudiante al final de esta semana. i-Ready es un programa en línea de lectura y/o matemáticas que ayudará al maestro o maestros de su estudiante a determinar las oportunidades de crecimiento de su estudiante, personalizar su aprendizaje y supervisar el progreso durante el año escolar. Es una evaluación adaptativa que ajusta sus

preguntas como convenga a las prioridades de instrucción de su estudiante. Cada elemento que ve un estudiante se individualiza según su respuesta a la pregunta anterior. Por ejemplo, una serie de respuestas correctas dará lugar a preguntas ligeramente más difíciles, mientras que una serie de respuestas incorrectas dará lugar a preguntas ligeramente más fáciles.

Es importante recordar que estos serán solo los puntajes base de su estudiante para el año. Elaboraremos un plan basado en los resultados y luego trabajaremos para que progrese. Lo más importante que puede hacer para ayudar a su estudiante esta semana es decirle que se esfuerce al máximo y que lo apoyará sin importar su puntaje. We will be having homework this year of 20 minutes of reading each night. I sent home a calendar to keep track of their reading in their take home folder. The take home folders should remain in their backpack, which means that the reading calendar should be easy to find. Once your child reads for 20 minutes, just sign that day on the calendar to confirm.

We also this week will be adding one page of math to complete each week. The page will be given on Monday and is due by Friday of that week.

Este año tendremos tarea de 20 minutos de lectura cada noche. Les envié a casa un calendario para que lleven un registro de su lectura en la carpeta. Estas carpetas deben permanecer en su mochila, lo que significa que el calendario de lectura será fácil de encontrar. Una vez que su hijo lea durante 20 minutos, simplemente firme ese día en el calendario para confirmarlo.

This month’s focus is Respect. One way to think about Respect is “seeing value in all people and things & treating them with care.” Many people feel Respected in different ways and we hope this month inspires discussions with your family about what Respect means to you and how you can practice it.

El enfoque de este mes es el Respeto. Una forma de pensar en el Respeto es "ver valor en todas las personas y cosas y tratarlas con consideración". Cada persona se siente respetada de diferentes maneras, y esperamos que este mes inspire conversaciones en familia sobre lo que significa el Respeto para ustedes y cómo pueden practicarlo.

In math this week, we are continuing Unit 1 of the Ready Math Curriculum. This unit focuses on place value of numbers beyond 1000. The video below outlines the unit's flow and progression so that you can see what your student will be learning.

We will be continuing our first class novel this week called "Dragons in a Bag" by Zetta Elliott. Our first unit will be about the fantasy genre and students will be learning about the elements of plot. This will culminate in students writing their own narrative stories.

Esta semana continuaremos con nuestra primera novela de clase, "Dragones en una Bolsa", de Zetta Elliott. Nuestra primera unidad tratará sobre el género fantástico y los estudiantes aprenderán sobre los elementos de la trama. Esto culminará con la escritura de sus propias historias narrativas.

I do allow snacks in my classroom. I have instructed the students that so long as the snack isn't making a mess and isn't distracting others that they can eat a snack whenever they are hungry. We do have a few allergies in our classroom so I do ask that any snacks that you send with your child not contain nuts.
