Home-School Math Connections
Have Fun playing with Math at home!
Computation involves solving problems using numbers and operations. At Green Meadow students from Pre-K-3 are solving problems by adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing too!
We encounter math in many aspects of everyday life.
When we quantify, or say how many, we use numbers to mathemitize the world.
When we calculate, or compute, we use numbers to solve problems.
Math is everywhere, enjoy noticing, talking and thinking about math with your children.

Problem Solving
Encourage your child to figure out answers to real-life situations: “We have one can of tuna and we need five. How many more do we need to buy?”
Ask questions that involve equal sharing, for example, “Seven children share 49 baseball cards. How many cards does each child get?”
Have questions? Please email our Math Coach, Terri Morrison at tmorrison@maynard.k12.ma.us.
Baseball Day - Thursday, April 3
We have a lot of students and staff who are excited by the start of the baseball season! In the spirit of the Red Sox home opener on Friday, April 4, we will host a Baseball Day on Thursday, April 3. Students are invited to wear something that represents their favorite baseball team (Maynard Tiger, Boston Red Sox, or another team). We will be rooting on the Red Sox in our pajamas on Friday!
All-School Pajama Day - Friday, April 4
Green Meadow students have been very busy reading and talking about books during our Read Across America Challenge! We will share more about exactly how many minutes students have been reading next week but we wanted to remind you that our challenge culminates with an All-School Pajama Day on Friday, April 4th!
Students can return their challenge suitcases through Wednesday, April 2, to be entered into the prize drawing. We will have a winner from each classroom!
MPS Pyramid Concert
A huge shout out to our Grade 3 Choir students for their performance at the Maynard Public Schools Pyramid Concert at Maynard High School on Thursday. Students volunteered to be part of the choir and attended rehearsals during part of their recess time. They performed three songs and then had the opportunity to watch the 8th grade and high school choirs perform. It was a wonderful evening and we are very proud of our Green Meadow participants. Special thanks to our music teacher, Natalie Wong, for bringing the idea to the district and dedicating time to the Grade 3 Choir.
Counselor's Corner
It is not uncommon for kids to get discouraged when learning new things that are particularly challenging. At Green Meadow, we talk a lot about having a “growth mindset”, understanding that one’s abilities can be developed with sustained effort, AND how making mistakes help us learn. We also call this “power of yet”. Check out this graphic for ideas to help your child reframe their frustrations by using a growth mindset and read here about how parents can instill a growth mindset at home. Additional SEL resources can be found on the Green Meadow Social Emotional Learning Resources website.

Maynard Public Library Programs
Author Appearance - Bob Shea - 11:00 AM - Maynard Library (Roosevelt Room) - Ages 3 and over
He's coming.....Bob Shea.....to the Maynard Public Library! We love all his characters - the Dinosaur, the Unicorn, the Shark, Leon.....okay, I'm running out of space! As part of the library's big Book Festival, our favorite author will do a presentation and then sign whatever books you want to buy. But the point is, you'll actually get a chance to meet this unbelievable author. We love all his books so how can we not love his program? You don't get a chance like this very often so come on over! (No registration needed)
Read-to-a-Dog - Wednesdays - April 16 & April 30 - 4:00 - 4:10 PM - 4:10 - 4:20 PM - 4:20 - 4:30 PM
Finn the Reading Dog visits the library every two weeks and he'd love for you to come and see him. Finn won't read to you but you can read to him. You can sign up for one of three ten-minute sessions and read one-on-one to this caring canine. He could be the dog you always wanted, for ten minutes anyway. To register, go to the library's website at www.maynardpubliclibrary.org and then look for the children's program calendar
The Friday Family Movie Club - Friday, April 4th at 3:00 PM
What better way to relax after a full day of school than to kick back and watch a movie at the library? Wait, what's this, there'll also be free popcorn and snacks? Do we really have to promote this any further? You have the rest of the weekend to do your homework, come to the library and watch "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown!" (No registration needed)
Outdoor Storytime - Thursdays - 4:00 PM - in Memorial Park - ages 3 and over -
Winter's almost over so storytime is moving back to Memorial Park. Do you know how happy the squirrels will be to see us - they went two months without hearing any stories? And you'll get to see the birds, you know, those things that have beaks and fly around. But best of all, we'll all be together listening to stories in the fine sunshine of Springtime. You'll feel great - as long as you don't sit on a rock! (rain location - the Story Room - no registration needed)
