Summer Reading Objectives:

  1. Assignments provide a common experience for all NCS Secondary students in grades 7 through 12.
  2. Establish English course expectations for reading which include keeping the students’ reading ability sharp over the summer months and providing a foundation for thematic study.

  3. Students gain valuable knowledge through reading books that highlight the style, expectations, and content of their upcoming English courses.

  4. Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment students establish a foundation of content and skill necessary for success in college-level courses.

Important Information for On-Level and Honors English Courses:

  • The Northlake Christian Secondary English Department requires all students enrolled in an English course to read ONE novel over the course of the summer.
  • The assigned novel, which may be obtained either in paper form or on a personal reading device, is based on the course the student will be entering the next school year.
  • As they read, each student will complete a Reading Log by closely following the attached instructions.
    • The Reading Logs will be turned in on the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL during your English class.
  • Students will take a test on the novel during the first week of class.
