October is Dyslexia Awareness Month

The West Linn-Wilsonville School District recognizes Dyslexia Awareness Month. In West Linn-Wilsonville, we are committed to every student learning to be a strong reader. Dyslexia is a neuro-biologically based difficulty in reading that impacts a student’s spelling and decoding abilities, resulting in non-fluent reading. Students with dyslexia tend to have a “sea of strengths” including reasoning, comprehension, problem-solving, vocabulary, and critical thinking. The International Dyslexia Association reports that up to 20% of students may experience dyslexia.

Learn more about dyslexia by reviewing resources in your school library, on the district website, or by visiting the International Dyslexia Association’s website.

Student Accident Insurance Information

The safety of our students is of critical importance. Even so, accidents do happen, at school and elsewhere, and required medical care can be expensive. Please know that your school does not assume responsibility for such costs but does offer access to several student accident insurance plans for voluntary purchase.

To learn more about student insurance options available to families, including how to enroll, please visit the district website.

Safety Spotlight — Standard Response Protocols

All West Linn-Wilsonville schools utilize Standard Response Protocols in the event of a school emergency. Students practice Standard Response Protocols (SRPs) regularly in consultation with district safety staff, local law enforcement, and local first responders. All of the Standard Response Protocols used in WLWV schools can be found below, and more information can be located on the district website.

Drills that are regularly practiced in the district include:

  • Lock Down: A Lock Down secures students, staff, and volunteers within classrooms while leaving entrances open for emergency personnel and law enforcement to clear the building.
  • Secure: A Secure secures and locks the building's entryways while safely sheltering all students, staff, and visitors inside the school building. This drill allows the school day to continue within the building.
  • Evacuate: An Evacuation requires students, staff, and visitors to relocate to another area in the event of a fire, earthquake, or other emergency situation.
  • Shelter: A Shelter requires students and staff to take shelter inside the school in the event that hazardous materials are released into the atmosphere, or extreme weather circumstances exist.
  • Hold: A Hold is used in situations that require students to remain in their classrooms. For example, a medical issue may require only one are ato be cleared, with halls still open in case outside medical assistance is required. The school day continues as usual during a "Hold."

Help Us Protect Our Students and the Environment By Avoiding Idling

Idling your car's engine sends engine exhaust into the air that hurts our environment and our kids. Car exhaust contains carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter, and cancer-causing toxins such as benzene. Breathing these fumes isn’t healthy for anyone, but children are particularly vulnerable to its harms. You can help cut down on exhaust by doing the following, especially when waiting in the pick-up or drop-off line at school:

If you’re going to be stopped longer than 10 seconds, turn it off

Idling more than ten seconds uses more gas than restarting your engine.

Be aware of idling when you’re waiting to pick up or drop off

Idling in a line of cars maximizes exposure to exhaust’s harmful pollutants for kids waiting

to climb into cars or buses, for their supervising teachers, for fellow parents, and for

younger siblings riding in the back seat.

Help improve air quality by curbing unnecessary idling

The average driver idles ten minutes every day, which wastes more than 30 gallons of gas per year, contributes to climate change, acid rain, and smog, and gets you 0 mph.
