Teaching 'is absolutely worth it!'
Get to know Shelby Teschendorf
While in college, Shelby Teschendorf worked as a substitute teacher and served as a paraprofessional for summer programs. Those experiences led her to Sunnyside Elementary School, where she teaches first grade. Since graduating seven year ago, she has been employed with Red Wing Public Schools..
I love helping children learn to read and build confidence. The early years are crucial for developing a lifelong love of learning, and it’s rewarding to watch their curiosity and skills grow.
What 2-3 books do you recommend parents read to their children and why?
“The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is great for teaching counting, the days of the week, and the life cycle of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. It’s currently a favorite in my household with my son. Another one of my favorites is “Charlotte’s Web,” a sweet story that talks about kindness and friendship.
What is your favorite thing about your job
I love building relationships with my students and watching them grow not just academically, but as people.
What would you tell someone thinking about becoming a teacher?
It’s one of the most rewarding careers, but also one of the most challenging. If you love kids, have patience, and enjoy learning alongside them, it’s absolutely worth it!
How do you spend your free time outside of school?
I enjoy spending time with my husband and 2-year-old son. In my free time, I love trying new recipes, reading, and being outdoors. Kayaking and going for walks are some of my favorite activities.

Register now for winter activities
The registration window for winter activities is now open at www.gowingers.com. We encourage students to register early, so that coaches may begin contacting families with important information relative to each activity.
Students must be registered, have their fee paid, and, if playing a sport, have a qualifying sports physical on file; physicals are good for three years. Reach out to Taylor Becker @ tebecker@rwps.org if you have any questions or concerns relative to registration.
