Tips for talking with your child about online safety
By having open and honest conversations with our children about their online behavior, we can help them develop the skills and awareness they need to navigate the digital world responsibly. We can also help children gain an understanding of the impact words and actions on others. Parents are encouraged to partner with MISD to help educate our students. As a parent, you can discuss with your child the importance of reporting any concerns or suspicious behavior to a teacher or other adult at school and you can encourage them to practice positive online behavior.
Here are some key points to consider when approaching a discussion about online safety:
- Express Concern and Support: Start the conversation by expressing your concern for their well-being and the well-being of others. Let them know that you are there to support them and help them navigate any challenges they may face.
Discuss the Consequences: Explain to your child the serious consequences that can result from making threats, even if they were not intended to be taken seriously. Emphasize the importance of thinking before posting anything online and the potential legal ramifications of such actions.
Encourage Empathy and Responsibility: Encourage your child to consider the feelings of others before posting anything online. Remind them that their words have power and can have a lasting impact on others. Encourage them to take responsibility for their actions and to apologize if they have hurt someone.
Set Clear Expectations: Establish clear expectations for your child's online behavior, including rules around what they can and cannot post on social media. Monitor their online activity regularly and be proactive in addressing any concerns that arise.
Seek Help if Needed: If you are concerned about your child's behavior online or if they are struggling with issues such as bullying or mental health challenges, don't hesitate to seek help from a trusted professional, such as a school counselor or mental health provider.
Midlothian ISD’s see something, say something culture is a critical component to keeping our schools safe and we commend students for using our “See It. Hear It. Stop It.” tool and we commend students, staff, parents and community for using this vital resource.
Event and Facility Guidelines
MISD enforces a clear bag policy for all extra-curricular events. Student expectations can be found here.
When to Use HEAR IT. SEE IT. STOP IT.
There are two great ways to report bullying and safety and security issues. One way is to contact campus administration directly and let them know the issue so they can fully investigate the matter. If you need to remain anonymous, then you can use the See IT Hear IT Stop IT tool available to staff, students, and families. This is also a great tool to use if it is after hours and you cannot contact an administrator directly. MISD encourages students, parents, and staff to speak to an administrator or utilize the online reporting tool.
