DMS Counseling Corner
Hi From the Counseling Corner!
We wanted to share a helpful tip from our Counseling Corner. If your child is experiencing a disagreement or conflict with a friend and they have a phone, consider encouraging them to speak in person rather than through text.
Dr. Geraldine Piorkowski mentions some great points in a recent Psychology Today article, "Trying to Resolve Conflict Via Texting Can Create Confusion." She shares that texting lacks many nonverbal cues, which can lead to misunderstandings, especially in emotional conversations. I've had many discussions with students this year who felt misunderstood or hurt after a text exchange with a friend.
Encouraging them to move conversations from text to face-to-face can greatly improve communication. Nonverbal cues such as tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions are key elements that are often lost in text messaging. Additionally, text messages can easily be shared or forwarded, which can complicate the situation further.
If your child ever needs assistance in navigating an in-person conversation, please know that we are here to help. In the meantime, encouraging them to take their conversations offline can make a significant difference.
Thank you for your support!
Also, please join us at our upcoming Coffee Night on February 10th! RSVP Here!

Doherty Values Challenge
DMS Values Challenge 2024-2025
Each month our DMS community will focus on recognizing students who are showing the value of the month. Throughout the month, the main office will incorporate the values into our morning announcements to help get the students aware of the value and ways that they could accomplish the value.
Redistricting
As we continue the K-8 redistricting process, we are pleased to invite the community to highlight areas of interest (i.e., neighborhoods, streets), with an interactive, online mapping tool - ARCGIS.
This resource will allow the community to review an updated scenario based on the collaboration with the School Committee at its January 9th meeting and community engagement. The updated scenario was presented to the community at a Let’s Talk! session on redistricting held January 16, 2025.
The community can provide visual feedback and written comments to DillingerRAD, the consultant supporting APS with this process. For more information on how to utilize the tool, please check here. Access to this link or the QR code below will close on Friday, January 24, 2025.
In Spring 2025, the School Committee will review the proposed redistricting options and vote on the preferred redistricting plan. The approved redistricting plan will be implemented in the 2026-27 school year. This allows the district sufficient time to operationally plan for the new school zones.
We appreciate your feedback.

Who We Are & Stay Connected
“Who We Are”
Communication with our families is essential to the success and wellness of our students. To assist our families and help them connect with the appropriate staff who is best suited to answer questions, we have updated our “Who We Are” page on our website. The information will guide families to resources on how to reach staff with concerns and how to stay connected to news and events across the district.
