KMS NEWSLETTER

Dear KMS Families,
There’s so much to celebrate at KMS! Our PTSA’s Cookie Dough Fundraiser was a tremendous success, raising more than $47,000 in sales and donations. Half of those proceeds will go directly back to the KMS PTSA to support student activities, schoolwide events, and campus improvement projects. We are deeply grateful to our students, families, and community members for their enthusiasm and generosity, and we extend special appreciation to PTSA President Beate Daly for her exceptional leadership and dedication to our school community.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will take place this week on Wednesday and Thursday, October 22 and 23, from 4:30 to 7:30 PM. This year, we’re doing things a little differently to better serve families who will benefit most from a team conference format. Grade-level teams will schedule meetings with families of students who may need additional support. Both evenings will include a mix of scheduled and open conference times, allowing all other families to drop in, visit with teachers, check on student progress, browse the Scholastic Book Fair, and stop by the Tech Help table for assistance with PowerSchool, Schoology, or other technology questions. Please check the flyer for open conference hours and additional details.
This week, students will also be choosing their next Flex class. Flex is an academic extension period designed to help students strengthen executive functioning skills, explore enrichment opportunities, and receive targeted academic support. Students who are working below grade level in reading, language, or math will be placed in an intervention or support class to build essential skills, and those needing extra time for assignments or organization may be assigned to a Study Hall. Students who are meeting grade-level expectations will have the opportunity to select from a variety of enrichment options. Flex sign-ups will be posted in each grade-level Schoology course on Wednesday, October 22, and surveys must be completed by Friday, October 24. While every effort will be made to honor student choices, some classes may fill quickly due to limited space.
Thank you for your continued partnership. Together, we’re helping every Kodiak Middle School student learn, grow, and succeed.

KMS PICTURE RETAKES: MONDAY 10/20
If you missed out on regular picture day, or were unhappy with the photos you received, don't worry!
We are having retakes on Monday morning!
You can send your student in with their order from last time, or a new order (we have order forms in the office) and we will announce by grade level when and where they will report to have their picture retaken. Online ordering is also available through LifeTouch.
If you have any questions, please call the KMS office at 907-486-7460.
KMS/SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR: OCT 20-24
It's time! The Book Fair is here!!
Students will have time to browse the selections and plan their purchases during ELA classes, as scheduled by their teachers.
Since we share our librarian with the high school, we will be limiting the times available to purchase items based on her schedule.
Purchases can be made either during the grade-level recesses or during the Parent/Teacher Conferences. (We would love a few more volunteers during Conferences, too!)
DON'T FORGET! If your student qualifies as a Migrant or IEA student, Ms. Bender has vouchers* for them to use, as well! (*Vouchers are restricted to purchases of books only, not items like toys/decoration, etc)

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES: OCT 22 & 23
This year, scheduled conferences will be arranged by each grade-level team to discuss student progress and address any concerns. Teachers will be reaching out directly to families who would benefit from a scheduled conference time.
All other families are welcome to stop by during open conference hours to check in, ask questions, or address any concerns you may have. We encourage everyone to take advantage of the Book Fair and the Tech Help table, where assistance will be available for PowerSchool, Schoology, and other online tools.
We look forward to seeing you and working together to support every student’s success!

MR. STEELE'S INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLASS
Students in the Kodiak Middle School Industrial Arts class are working on a fund-raising project!
Each 8th grader is making a folding camp chair to sell at the AAUW holiday bazaar on Nov. 8th. Each folding chair requires students to use the table saw, miter saw, band saw, drills, and impact driver. All students measured and made dozens of cuts to prepare their chair materials. Many of these 8th graders are in IA for the second year and are showing proficiency using hand tools and power tools.
Look for these folding camp chairs, as well as many other items, for sale at the
holiday bazaar Nov. 8th!
PTSA'S 2ND ANNUAL TASTE OF KODIAK POTLUCK
KMS PTSA is hosting the 2nd Annual Taste of Kodiak Potluck Dinner to show appreciation for our Kodiak Middle School teachers and staff during Parent/Teacher Conferences on Wednesday, October 22.
We’d love your help in providing a delicious meal. Sign up to bring your favorite main dish, side dish, or dessert. There are about 50 teachers and staff who will be staying for conferences, so every contribution helps.
Food can be dropped off at KMS between 1:30 and 2:45 PM on Wednesday, October 22. Please bring it to the Teacher’s Lounge (formerly the old CTE classroom). Park in the lot in front of the auditorium and follow the signs on the Rezanof side.
If you can’t make that drop-off time, you can leave your dish in the KMS Office earlier in the day.
If you have any questions, please contact Beate Daly at akdalyfamily@gmail.com or text 907-942-7927.
Please include your name and the name of your dish when you drop it off. Teachers and staff will vote for their favorites, and the winning dishes will earn the Golden Spatula Award and a piece of Grizzly gear.
Thank you for helping us celebrate and support our incredible KMS teachers and staff!
