Academic Way Athletic Fields returned the Diocese of Lansing Academic Way Athletic Fields returned the Diocese of Lansing

At its regular meeting on Monday, July 20, 2026, the Haslett Public Schools Board of Education approved a resolution authorizing the steps necessary to return the property at the corner of Academic Way and Haslett Road, across from Wilkshire Early Childhood Center, to the Catholic Diocese of Lansing.

The action closes out an arrangement that dates back more than three decades. In 1991, the Diocese of Lansing made the land available to Haslett Public Schools for community athletic fields, under an agreement that always provided for the property to return to the Diocese in 2021. For more than 30 years, that partnership gave the greater Haslett community a home for youth soccer and recreation, and the district was glad to develop and maintain the fields throughout that time.

"Thousands of young people have played on these fields because the Diocese agreed to share this land with our community," said Superintendent Patrick Malley. "We are grateful for that generosity. The 1991 agreement required that we return the property to the Diocese, and with their request to do so, this action honors the commitment our district made."

The fields have been used primarily by club and township youth programs, and the district recognizes what they have meant to those families. Haslett Public Schools will communicate directly with the affected organizations and will work alongside the clubs and Meridian Township to support a smooth transition. The district's own athletic programs are housed at Haslett High School and do not depend on the Academic Way property, so Haslett school teams are not affected by the change.

Questions about future plans for the property are best directed to the Diocese of Lansing at 517-342-2440. Questions about field scheduling and community athletic activities may be directed to the Haslett Public Schools Community Education office at 517-339-2665.
